World class Merlot and Cabernet, without a doubt. I must add Syrah to this list as well. There are producers in all of those categories which could stand toe to toe with first growth Bordeaux and the best the Rhone has to offer.

Here's a strange one that might qualify: Ethiopian Food. Seattle has more Ethiopian food than Ethiopia*. The other day I was looking for a restaurant near the Medgar Evers pool and didn't feel like Ethiopian food, but was surprised to find almost nothing but Ethiopian. Most big cities have at least a handful of them, but our Central District is flooded with the places. Check out what I'd call Little Ethiopia.

* Sorry.

Yeah, I went to Garfield and we used to go every day to the little Ethiopian grocery on Cherry, and periodically we had lunch at one of the four or five Ethiopian restaurants within a couple blocks. Down Jefferson next to Seattle U there are several more, with some Somalian restaurants scattered around as well.

I always thought of most of W Wash as "Seattle" (with the exceptional exception of Tacoma, of course.)

But Seattle claims Nirvana and Kurt Cobain as our own.

I just remembered one: Woodland Park Zoo! They changed the idea of zoos throughout the world. Instead of sad animals in cages, they changed the standard to zoos that feel like there are no cages - both for the visitors and the animals.
