So much red yet Obama won the election. Maybe...some areas in this country are more populated than others and we can't use this graphic to measure anything? Just maybe...

It's been said before and maybe even in this thread (regarding the silly map), land doesn't vote, people do.

The map is irrelevant for Republican spinmeisters, for the reason mentioned.

The map is irrelevant for Democratic spinmeisters, as only 30.2% of eligible voters pulled the lever for Obama.

The map is irrelevant for secession, as even in 1861, Southerners were far from being of one accord.

The idea of secession is truly ridiculous. Those signing the petition are expressing a sentiment that has zero chance of ever happening.

Time Magazine mentions that there is another petition that has gotten more than 24,000 signatures already.

“Deport Everyone That Signed A Petition To Withdraw Their State From The United States Of America.”

Yes, yes, blah-blah, we know it's not going to happen, for reasons ALREADY discussed. Besides, based on historical precedence, we'd be hunted down and shot for trying.

But the petition you reference does give me hope. Can you Blue-Staters exercise the courage of your convictions, be the hardline nationalists that you are and have us deported ? Works either way for us.

It's actually the opposite. Why not look at a map that accurately depicts where people actually live?

There are more people in Kings County, NY (Brooklyn) than in every county in Nebraska combined, for example.

I clearly missed my calling. I need to get into the map business. Bummed out ? There's a map to make you feel better!

I remember in 2004, when secession fever gripped the Democrats. Their plan was to divide America into The United States of Canada and Jesusland. I remember when Chicagoans changed their sigs to reflect that they were Chicagoans first and foremost.

For the record, I would have been okay with that. Only I would have taken Alberta, for Jesusland, and renamed The United States of Canada 'Jesusland Lite', to account for all the megachurches in Minneapolis.

There's now a petition circulating El Paso to secede from Texas if Texas secedes from the US!

This sort of self-dramatizing primal scream therapy for those butthurt by the election really cracks me up!

Me ? I consider it a sign of health. The election is just a catalyst. The United States is the dysfunctional family that is convinced that it has no recourse but to stick together, lest it become the talk of the town, as if the town doesn't see through the charade.

There is also a petition that mentions Houston, Austin, Dallas, and San Antonio seceding from Texas, should Texas decide to secede from the US.

Most of those red counties are rural and have small populations.

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't the southern region of the USA (south east) the poorest part of the country? With the exception of Texas, most other states are kind of poor like Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas etc. I know this is a joke, but I am pretty sure most of the southern states are better off with the Union.

Anyways, about the petition thingy, I believe the Civil War settled the issue about whether or not states have a right to succeed .

The sad part about this whole thing- we are no longer a nation that says the other guy one but we are still one country. Instead the side that lost always feels a since of hopelessness that all is lost, and the side that wins always has the arrogant attitude "We won, so you better shut up and do what we say!" This is a very dangerous situation....nobody leads from the middle and tries to hear all voices and we just continue to have less and less in common. And the bottom line is, we are so obsessed with who the winners and the losers are that none of us win and we all lose...It doesnt matter who wins, every day we have less and less freedoms. Im only 24 and I have seen my country become more and more divided. We had better stop this attitude... this kind of "politicians pitting neighbor against neighbor" garbage is what created the holocaust.

Politics may be divided but culturally the USA has never been more united. These petitions have come from every state. It's just fun with the Internet, nothing else. Fear not 24 year old, the union is as secure, if not more, than it has ever been.

I think this just goes to show that we have become a b***h and while society. If something doesnt go our way, we will whine and cry about to get attention. Some of us have yet to grow up.

Maybe a decade or two of violent political change (aka military juntas, civil wars, etc) will make us be glad for the political system we have.
