There is also momo shop in front of Spencers in Velachery which is near rex fashion, mega mart etc.

They tastes good and value for money. You can expect mainland china types..but cooked on the spot and served hot hot..

No oil...hence we often eat this as evening snack, (instead of oil samosa & puffs, pastries etc) or dinner too..

Noodle king is promoted by the same people who promoted Pizza Corner. The food is cheap and the taste it pretty good considering the price. One of the better outlet is in Nungambakkam near the crescent hotel.

Ate at Kanagadurga mess, the review as follows,
Location, Next to SivaVishnu Temple near TNagar Bus Terminus(IInd Floor)
Price: Meals - 60, Parcel double meals-75, Omlette-20, AC room also available.

The Dal powder had lots of Dhaniya Taste, Carrot Peas Poriyal, Brinjal Kootu, Dal (with tomato), Kara Thuivaiyal(this too with tomato), sambar/rasam/more kuzhambu, Curd & Applam.

Should be a very good food for many people, so a Recommendation from my side.

Those who dislike Tomato taste, give this a skip (Even I hate tomato, so I won't be seen again)

@Friends,
Suggest a Nice / Cheap/ signature food all along anna salai / TNagar Area/ Triplicane /Tambaram area, I will post review soon.

Come December. All the Music Sabhas in Chennai boast specialist canteens.

Though the domination of Tanjore origin cooks is more, they dish out the best items day by day all through the season.

You may get the best varieties of Vegetarian snacks and meals (including Kalyana Sappadu).

My regular joints during the season are
Music Academy (Cathedral Road / TTK Road Corner), Narada Gana Sabha (TTK Road) , Mylapore Fine Arts (Oliver Road).

P.S: Those who are more interested in visiting the canteens than the concerts, please choose your time accordingly. It will be very difficult to get a seat during the normal breaks. Sometimes, the crowd will be so frustrating if you land up at wrong time.

Have you guys tried the small spicy Irani samosa & (orange coloured) Irani tea at the Irani Chai shop on General Patters Road ?.

That used to be our fav Joint off Mount Road.

Now the management seems to have changed. Last week, I noticed kerala guys doing brisk business there. Even the samosa were the usual ones which one gets in all Chai Shops.

Another Joint was the BR Tea Stall at the Junction of Lloyds Road & TTK Road. I heard that the Chetan now has become so rich that he has BR Tea Stalls at many localities across Chennai. Used to be Fantastic Service by his staff.

There is a juice shop at the corner of CP Ramasamy Road - Dr.Ranga Road corner (at the signal). They also have a Chaat Corner attached.

If you order any juice, they make very liberal qty which is more than 1.5 times and sometimes almost 2 times. The beauty is that they keep the balance in the jar and serve only to you after you finish the first fill.

Comparatively very cheap for the quality you get.

School Kids & nearby Office staff flock to this joint., Always crowded.

(The negative is that the corner / Junction is packed with hapazardly parked 2 wheelers of those who come to this shop disturbing the smooth traffic flow)

The Chaat is not good there.

Been to Singh's restaurant in my neighborhood (Opposite to Gandhi Nagar bus terminal). What a waste of money. uncooked chicken, student mess like ambience and pathetic biryani. Will never go back there.
On an another note, I have become quite so regular at Venkys xprs near Adyar depot that their staff has started identifying me.

Adieu Vancouver, hello Chennai
DC | Conan Mendoza | 11 hours 3 min ago

Quote:
Chindi Varadarajalu a restaurateur was born in Chennai, traversed the ends of the world, starting in Vancouver where she set up her own restaurant called Chutney Villa, and gave it up only to find her calling right here in Chennai’s outskirts.

She started out with nothing and made it so far all by herself. She talks about her culinary journey of South Indian Cuisine and setting up L’attitude in Mammallapuram.

Culinary journey
My culinary adventure started in my childhood, being around Chinese, Malay, Indians and so many other cultures. I moved to Vancouver in 1992, where I happened to be in another melting pot of cultures, languages, festivals and food. The dining scene is very vibrant in Vancouver, being one of the most exciting cities for food and where I set up my first restaurant ‘Chutney Villa’.

Returning to Chennai
In Canada setting a restaurant, in terms of red tape and licensing, is a breeze compared to India. Then the working culture is so very different as well. Both have its pros and cons, both come with their own challenges. Moving to India had many challenges, not just professionally but also in my personal life.

Near the pristine shores

Moving to India has been a desire for me for a few years. It began when I started leading culinary tours from Canada to South India and decided to move here. I met a friend who was building a resort in Mamallapuram and to make a long story short, we decided to join hands and open l’attitude 49.

Chef’s special
My recipes are my own that I have collected or created throughout my life. Fish Benedict, a fillet of fish that is grilled, on a bed of greens and is topped with a tangy hollandaise sauce and a Malaysian dish called Sambal.

The organic touch
I get raving reviews about the food. People are very happy with the quality and varied tastes of the food. Our little garden is just starting and right now we have herbs that we find difficult to source, but we do have plans to totally expand on it.

Into the future
Even though I still consider Vancouver home and that eventually I will go back there and maybe open more restaurants there, my life is here now, in Mamallapuram.

Once again..I have'nt visited this place..but got this info from very reliable source...
I think you are referring to "Annalakshmi". In the name of charity it is a open loot. A meal costs 1200 per person

Hmm it is expensive but I dont think is the price.

When I tried booking for last weekend, they told me that for buffet it is 450 ~ with tax and for table service its 580 ~ and asked me if they can allot for next weekend.

Even in Ambica Empire which has Veg Buffet for 480 Rs (which is expensive, given the avg. quality and the limited options in Veg) .

So I think comparatively Annalakshmi is worth the money, due to the pleasure of tasting authentic dishes prepared by traditional cooking, in the age where people spend 1000 Rs just like that for ordinary food in luxury hotels

Are people without Show tickets or non-sabha members, allowed to eat at these canteens

Read a review article about the food available in various sabhas yesterday. Since then, my stomach has suddenly gone on strike until I take it to one of these sabhas
