Whats wrong with Tampa

"moved here from Phoenix, I've been here for about 5 months and I can't wait to leave this place. Tampa is dirty, and the roads are some of the worse I've ever seen. Its narrow, and they need to repave every single street. Freeway system is aweful too. Looking at crime rates, a city that is by far smaller than Phoenix, it has more murder than Phoenix.
There are beaches in St. Pete, Clearwater etc. but unless you are 60 you are not going to enjoy these waveless beaches. Honestly do not move or come here, this place is aweful. This place is only an upgrade if you are coming from Anartica."

"My best memory of Tampa will be when I leave it. I have never spent a more useless 2 years of my life in one place, ever. From the hillbillies eating fried chicken and barbecue to the facist cops putting up cameras in Ybor City, I can't wait for the next climactic change to raise sea level and inundate the whole goddam state. It would be no loss to humanity"

Signed proudly,
Carl Olsen

these are some things I found about Tampa on a travel site (http://www.virtualtourist.com/vt/bacc2/a/23b8/) I was wondering what your opinions on Tampa are. Ive been there 3 times and I really liked it there. Only complaints I had was the crime (which didnt affect me), it was touristy, the downtown was too "glassy", and there were a large bum population. I liked it there, and even considered living there and going to school. The city was beautiful from what I saw, especially the cruise ship dock area lol. Just curious to what you Southerners think about Tampa?
BTW--I found Clearwater Beach a very pleasant beach, although too touristy.

a relative of mine who lived there complained about rednecks, rude conservatives and incompetent academics.

There are rednecks, but far less than other cities in the South. I don't know anything about the crime, but the bar/night scene is one of the best around. Academics, well, Tampa is a product of the Florida system, no better, no worse.

Isn't Florida something like 48th in the country for education?

IMO, the problem with Florida is that it's still run by the Republican slanted "good ole boy network"...

you can probably find testimonials like that (or worse) for many cities...btw

you can find bad things to see about any cities, but yes northern Florida does tend to be more conservative and "southern" than southern Florida!

Tampa does have a kick-ass night life and cool urban spots. Truly, I've come to notice that there are rednecks everywhere, from California to New York and everywhere in between!

Good riddance to Carl 'Drama Queen' Olsen. Tampa's all the better for his glorious departure.

And Florida's not Republican enough IMO.

Hell, the most redneck town i've ever seen is up here outside of Boston, a town called Berlin.

What has happened to Florida education is a monstrousity. Jeb continues to push this FCAT crap, shuting down schools that need funding, overfunding schools that don't need it, and all teachers now teach to the stupid test, and basic things like reading Beowulf or Catcher in the Rye (things I did not read in my Florida highschool) do not get taught as a result. I dont know if this is a political thing or not, but statically the Northeast and West Coast have much higher education standards than the South.

Umm, the ole boy network in Florida is Democratic - like the He-Coon . . .

You don't like it you are welcome to return to Phoenix.

It has it's problems, but the beaches are not one of them. And if the closedcircuit tv bothers you, remember to avoid the UK.

He (Olsen) probably got dumped by a Tampa chick.

And yes, ironically it's the Democrats that have become the party of reactionaries, the Republicans the radicals. Jeb got the libertarian think tank Cato Institute's top rating for governors.

REDNECKS: Or rather, HILLBILLIES: I've been to OHIO, ILLINOIS, MICHIGAN, PENNSYLVANIA, TENNESSEE, KENTUCKY, VIRGINIA, etc... FLORIDA does NOT have the CORNER on the market for having hillbillies and white trash on THIS SIDE of the MISSISSIPPI. Try Newport News, Akron, Lansing, Louisville, Chatanooga, Richmond and Charleston, WV, on for size. I won't even mention Georgia- its too easy of a target.

BUT, TAMPA IS a white trash town. HILLSBOROUGH county is a haven for PORN STORES, STRIP CLUBS, THRIFT STORES, K-MARTS, Hot hillbilly women and actual porn actresses (using the term loosely). BARS, CLUBS, PROSTITUTES. What's there NOT TO LIKE?

Like Phoenix is the promised land? Please.
