Ok, There is one thing that im sad that they didn't utilize one thing from the renderings.
They didn't put Glass Jetways.
Yes the tubes connecting to the building are glass but not the ones connecting to the plane.
kinda a dissapointment, but it still looks beautiful.

Another thing as well
the future of plans look like they can expand to 5 gates, but are those Dual Jetways i see as well?
It looks like some are connected to smaller planes

Let's wait and see. The old Mandurriao Airport's lifespan is ticking quickly. I will really miss the old airport the next time I goes home in 2009.

Actually, this airport rose from what was the Japanese Landing Field of Tiring during World War II.

It was already an airstrip before but later reverted back as an agricultural land.

Coincidentially, the Japanese themselves are the main contractors of the said project.

haha... I can imagine myself being the "official Manugsugat" sa mga maalabot kay ako lang guid ang pinakalapit sa Airport kag ako lang man isa Taga Cabatuan, one tricycle/multicab lang man ang airport halin sa balay.hehe... the Sta Barbara-Cabatuan Bypass guin 4-lane na nila... which is nice... the DOTC-Iloilo International Airport Office in Cabatuan was transferred to The New Iloilo Airport Site in Gaub, which means that ready na sila, gahulat nalang matapos ang finishing touches. I just joined this Friendster Group sang mga gaulubra sa Airport... they have a lot of nice pics...

The Japanese Landing field is built of bricks from Janiuay Church and Cabatuan Convent. According to someone who works in the New Airport, the real location of the New Airport is not in Tiring but in Gaub... historically the Japanese Landing Field was said to be built in Tiring but it's really geographically located in Gaub... They associated it with Tiring since Tiring in Cabatuan has the only access towards the Japanese Landing site which is the Quirico Espano Avenue.

What's good about the location is that there's lots of room to expand for more runways and terminals, should Iloilo become a hub for Visayas.

i wish the same thing, franz. Our friends from Davao had experinced so much hassles in going to Iloilo 2 years ago cos of delayed flight and staying in Cebu. I wish there'll be direct flights to Iloilo SOON from other parts of country as well.

it'll be soon to say goodbye to our beloved Mandurriao Airport. However, I'll see the day when the old airport's site will rise again and proved its worth in spurring Iloilo's economy. Let's hope for the best.

20 kms more or less.

GenSan I think may have a non-stop flight to Iloilo like before (cross your fingers). Hopefully someday, Iloilo would be an alternative hub to Cebu for other flights in southern and central Philippines.

The airport though is already big as compared to the old airport in Mandurriao. Later, it will be expanded if the air traffic and passenger's demand increases.

reposting some old articles about the airport

Gloria excited on new Iloilo airport opening
by Francis Allan L. Angelo

PRESIDENT Gloria Arroyo is excited to inaugurate the P6-billion new Iloilo airport of international standards at the Cabatuan-Sta. Barbara area, said Representative Arthur Defensor (Iloilo, 3rd district).

Defensor said President Arroyo will lead the inauguration and opening of the airport in middle of April.

The new airport will begin operation April 14, according to the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC).

Citing their meeting in Malacaņang last week, Defensor said President Arroyo “is very enthusiastic to inaugurate the airport as soon as possible.”

“This airport is one of the most modern and beautiful in terms of architecture and design. But what is important is that this airport will become the key to the rapid development and progress of the city and province of Iloilo and the rest of Western Visayas,”

According to DOTC officials, President Arroyo will be on board the first plane to land on the multibillion airport facility.

Installation and testing of the airport’s aviation equipment is ongoing while the DOTC is now hiring personnel that will operate the facility.

Families affected by the airport project will be prioritized in the hiring, the DOTC said.

The new airport sits on a 200-hectare land straddling the towns of Sta. Barbara and Cabatuan.

Its 48,000-square meter apron can accommodate six commercial planes at a time.

The airport project is financed by a P5.259-billion loan from Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) while the Philippine government allotted a counterpart fund of P928 million.

New airport opens in April; a new gateway to Visayas
BY DAVID ISRAEL SINAY

ILOILO City – The P6.187-billion new Iloilo airport of international standards will open for commercial flights in the first week of April this year, announced Senator Franklin Drilon.

A test flight was supposed to be conducted yesterday but did not push through; no reason was given. But Drilon, who worked hard for the project’s realization since 1995, went ahead with the ocular inspection with Secretary Leandro Mendoza of the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC). Both were pleased with what they saw.

Drilon expressed fulfillment. “I am able to complete the airport. I will be proud to look back my 12 years as senator,” he said.

The opening of this new airport will also mean the closure of the existing domestic airport in Mandurriao district here.

Drilon said the Department of Finance’s (DOF) Assets Disposition division is eyeing a joint venture or an outright sale of the 54-hectare Mandurriao property. Appraisals have already been made on the value of the property, he disclosed.

By February, airline companies shall start constructing their offices at the new airport that straddles the boundaries of the municipalities of Sta. Barbara, San Miguel and Cabatuan, said Mendoza.

DOTC Project Manager Eduardo Mangalili said the airport is about 96 percent finished now. These include civil works, utility works, building works and navigational works.

The new airport will be a new gateway to the Visayas for air travelers in the country and worldwide. It has a runway 2.5 kilometers long and 45 meters wide, a passenger terminal with 12,000 square meters of space and a 1,281-square meter cargo terminal.

Drilon said it will open vast opportunities fro business, employment and economic growth.

The new Iloilo airport is part of the DOTC’s development thrust of developing airports of international standards. Mendoza said the new airport will improve air transportation safety and boost the economy of Western Visayas.

The existing Iloilo airport in Mandurriao is the fourth busiest in the country in terms of passenger traffic, next to the Ninoy Aquino, Mactan and Davao international airports. But it can no longer be expanded due to the existence of roads and rivers, and the urbanization around it. It also has obsolete facilities. Thus the creation of the new airport sitting on 188 hectares of land.

On March 2000, the implementation of the project was approved by the National Economic Development Authority which led to the signing of the Special Yen Loan Package (SYLP) Loan Agreement PH P-214 between the Government of the Philippines and Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) on August 31, 2000.

Construction started on April 19, 2004. Repayment will be done for 30 years, starting on August 20, 2010 at an interest rate of 0.9 percent with a grace period on principal in seven years, Mendoza said.

The Japanese contractor of the airport project is scheduled to turn over the facility to the DOTC on March 17, 2007.

On the other hand, the old domestic airport in Mandurriao, Iloilo City will be transformed into a commercial and light industrial complex.

The new airport aims to serve the increasing number of air passenger and cargo traffic in Iloilo, and its influence areas to boost economic development of the Visayas regions, particularly Region VI covering the provinces of Antique, Aklan, Iloilo, Capiz, Guimaras and Negros Occidental.

New Iloilo Airport now ready for test flights
By Erly C. Garcia

The new airport which is of international standard is expected to start commercial operations by April this year.

Other officials like Presidential Adviser for Western Visayas Rafael Coscolluela, Representative Arthur Defensor of the third district, Governor Niel Tupas Sr., and Air Tranportation Office Manager Allan Java also joined the activity.

The group aboard a convoy of vehicles toured the airport's 2.5 kilometer runway and then had a glimpse of the airport's state of the art passenger terminal.

NIADP project manager Eduardo Mangalili said the entire structure is 97 percent completed and will be ready for test flights in the next few days.

Upon seeing the progress of the works, all Drilon could say was: "I feel fulfilled."

Drilon along with then Governor Defensor was very instrumental in the initiation of the project.

For Defensor the NIADP is a "dream come true."

"After all the troubles, problems and challenges we now see the fruit of our hard work," Defensor said of the new airport which was initiated during his term and was implemented during the time of Governor Tupas.

Secretary Mendoza, on the other hand, expressed that the new airport would spur the development of Iloilo and the entire Western Visayas.

"Aside from passenger traffic we also expect a big volume of seafood cargo going direct to countries like Canada and the United States," Mendoza said.

Equipped with modern equipment, the NIADP which will be operational 24 hours a day could accommodate bigger aircrafts like Airbus 330 and Airbus 340 and even Boeing 747.

Mendoza said, initially the airport would accommodate domestic flights but it will be opened to international flights later.

Disposing old airport site

Meanwhile, the Asset Disposition Committee (ADC) of the Department of Finance is now on the process of disposing the existing 54-hectare Iloilo Airport site in Mandurriao district which will eventually be closed when the new airport starts operation.

Drilon said ADC will open the property for public bidding.

Initially, the senator said, the proposal is to develop the old airport site into a second urban center in the city of Iloilo. This means the area will be converted into a commercial complex.

Drilon, however, warned officials of the Air Transportation Office to ensure that the airport site will not be intruded by squatters once it is already vacated.

Need for stable energy

Further, Drilon expressed the province's need of a stable power supply to complement the expected entry of investors in the city and province of Iloilo.

Drilon noted the present problem on energy as the province is dependent on power coming from diesel plants of the National Power Corporation.

Drilon said there is an immediate need to attract investors in the power sector to address this problem.

1) Definitely Ayala Land! They create upscale developments. We meight be seeing Iloilo's verson of Makati or FBGC within the next ten years.

2)T he Lopez family has a home advantage since they originate from Iloilo. If you would ask me, they deserve the land the most since theyr trace their roots in this city and another Rockwell development in Iloilo is not bad at all.

SM already has a lot of developments in the city, a mall in Mandurriao, a department store in the city proper and a supermarke in Jaro.

I don't like the quality of Robinsosn's developments and specially not Filinvest.
