St Johns' Cathedral in Netherlands is an absolute masterpiece! One of the most beautiful things I've seen!

The main Gothic cathedral in Romania is the Black Cathedral in Brasov, built in the 14th century

One of the coolest ruins ever is in the Gothic style: Whitby Abbey, Whitby, UK
It's like you are looking at a painting.

In my opinion the whole trend of calling something "-revival" is complete BS. It's still gothic architecture.

It's a matter of fact that Gothic architecture ended in the 16th century.

I don't regard Gothic Revival architecture as inferior to original Gothic architecture, but it's still a new style, however.

"Gothic Art" is the art of Gotes (the germans..), so, the pure middle age gothic. If you are talking about Gothic style, it could include neogothic, but that's not original Obviously!

in Italy

Gothic in Italy has always been very "light" if compared with our imagery of Gothic art. Type Italian Gothic on Google and see, it is very different then european gothic (central italian gothic buildings are made of red bricks and white marble, northern and southern are made of stone.. Here I'd like to show you a particular (and atypical) kind of Southern italian gothic: Arabic-Norman gothic, whose best example are in Sicily

PALERMO cathedral - capital city of Sicily (North-western sicily)

(arabic-norman style building with a later baroque dome)

MONREALE , town nearby

CEFALU' (north-eastern sicily)

And finally.... a Gothic jewel! closer to the north european style, here is a nice church that has nothing to do with those sicilian ones, but it's fascinating, in the wonderful land of Tuscany:

St. Galgano Abbey - TUSCANY

Who cares if it's original or not? If it has trefoils, pointed arches, flying buttresses, lots of spires, etc. it's Gothic. If someone mentions a Gothic skyscraper you know exactly what they are talking about. You don't have to redundantly put 'revival' after it.

The term "Gothic" has nothing to do with the ethnical Goths. The style was named "Gothic" by the Italian architect Giorgio Vasari because he regarded this style as "barbaric" and "inferior" to classical art.

It's quite hard to say if the pointed arches are Gothic or Arabic.
