DUBAI | Dubai Entertainment District (Five New Theme Parks)

Dh10 billion complex with five distinct theme parks to be located in Jebel Ali

Gulf News Report
Published: 23:17 November 26, 2012

Dubai: A new Dh10 billion entertainment complex in Dubai, featuring five distinct theme parks, has been announced on Monday.

The new complex, approved by His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and announced on Monday night in a statement issued by Dubai Media Office, will be located at Jebel Ali and feature theme parks based on movies, animals and fun characters aimed at appealing to all demographics.

It will offer multi-faceted leisure and entertainment facilities and will cater to both residents and tourists. Meraas Holding will oversee the new development.

The first phase of the development will be Dubai Adventure Studios, which was originally announced by Meraas in December 2011. It is set to host Hollywood brands and will have a range of “adrenalin-challenging rides and attractions that will be accessible to people of all ages.”

A second park will be named Bollywood Parks, and will focus the immense global appeal of Indian cinema. Meraas has partnered with several major film studios in Mumbai to provide content, while a large theatre within the park is expected to showcase Broadway-style musicals. The theatre will also become part of Dubai’s annual entertainment calendar.

A water and marine life park will showcase aquatic life, animal encounters and live shows, besides rides and attractions. A theme park catering to the need of toddlers, preschoolers and primary school children will also be built, as will a night safari that will highlight the Arabian desert.

The theme parks will be connected by a district featuring retail and dining offerings. The first component of the development is expected to be completed by 2014.

“Meraas has been working with several industry experts to bring together a powerful mix of components that fulfill the need for a pure entertainment-based destination,” said Abdulla Ahmad Mohammad Al Habbai, Chairman of Meraas Holding, who said the new complex will contribute to the growth of the economy.

This is Dubai’s second major product announcement in this week, following the announcement of Mohammad Bin Rashid City on Saturday.

Grand Prairie based Six Flags describes itself as the largest regional theme park operator in the world.

Now it looks like the definition of “region” is expanding. The company said Thursday it will partner with another firm to open a location in Dubai. Here’s the news release:

Meraas Leisure and Entertainment LLC,announced today a new strategic partnership to bring a Six Flags-branded theme park to Dubai. The project is planned to open in late 2017 and will be located within the multi-themed park project in Jebel Ali launched by Meraas.

“The cornerstone of our international expansion strategy has always been finding the right partner in the right location and, with Meraas in Dubai, we have done exactly that,” said Jim Reid-Anderson, Chairman, President and CEO of Six Flags Entertainment. “We are honored to be working with this world-class organization as the first significant strategic step taking the Six Flags brand to growing and successful markets outside North America.”

Raed Al Nuaimi, Chief Leisure and Entertainment Officer, Meraas L&E, said: “We are delighted to have a world-leading theme park company and a brand like Six Flags on board. We are confident their presence will perfectly complement our project and further enhance our overall offerings in the leisure and entertainment space.”

More details to come …

Even though I regularly check out the Dubai sub-forum I never heard of this project.

Does anybody know if this project is a replacement for the Dubailand theme parks?

I see that this Entertainment District will be located in Jebel Ali. Does anybody know the exact location(s)?

It will contain 12 themed attractions inspired by popular Sony Pictures releases such as Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Ghostbusters, Zombieland and Hotel Transylvania.

Dubai Parks and Resorts said in a statement that the inclusive of the Sony Pictures Studio and Smurfs Zone “is set to take visitors on a cinematic journey of discovery, bringing to life some of the most recognisable Hollywood icons from the big screen. The park will leverage latest-in-technology attractions and new-generation rides to offer a distinctly unique, high-value entertainment experience.”

Motiongate Dubai will encompass 372,000 square metres and is anticipated to attract three million visitors a year. The park will have four zones and 27 attractions.
