Trondheim Fjord Bridge, Norway, 1.4 km cable stayed + 5.3 km floating
Although this project has a very long way to go before realization yet, I think it deserves a thread of its own. A municipal / private study has been made for a crossing across the Trondheim fjord, which is deep (500 m + ) and wide (6 km at the narrowest), making both ordinary bridges and tunnels challenging. The proposed solution: 1.4 km cabled stayed bridge with sailing height of 90 m combined with a side anchored floating bridge of length 5.3 km. The cable stayed bridge has one of its pylons resting at a skerry close to land and the other one at a subsurface "mountain" at 53 m depth.

That bridge looks great! Wouldn't mind having a drive over that one haha.

Well, it might take a "few" years. The floating bridge would btw be the longest in the world, and the estimated price tag is 11.4 billion NOK, ie 1.5 billion Euro.

have they considered the option of a floating bridge with a floating tunnel section to allow for ships to pass?

To be honest for 1.5 billion euros I think you're getting a very good deal. I would have expected this to me much more expensive than that!

Costs are underestimated as is always the case for such mega-project....

On the other hand, I acknowledge that politics in Norway is not always rational. But why do you want the Sognefjord bridge to be a traditional suspension bridge. That is an absolute insane idea.... The costs here are sketchy indeed, but once a firmer estimate is made there should not be that many surprises. The floating bridge is modularized, and the bridge has a main span of "only" 700 m.

![]() The first one of these major fjord crossing bridges to be built will likely be a project crossing the Boknafjord. After that I believe we might see a bridge crossing the Sognefjord, and finally there will be a bridge over the Trondheimsfjord and Bjørnafjorden most likely from Os to Tysnes (Reksteren). Although I must agree that the Sognefjord bridge should be last one to be built. However given the record of the transport ministry's history, it wouldnt surprice me if they bump that one up and moves it forward in the queue. One thing is certain though. The pure dimensions of these four bridges will seem rediculous from an outsiders perspective considering the traffic volume. Especially on the Sognefjord bridge, which litterally sits in the middle of nowhere. Last edited by Bannor; January 13th, 2013 at 07:30 PM. |
