Historical Designs / Utopias / Monuments - Never built
It seemed interesting to me to share historical designs/drawings for structures that never made it. Not only to share a dreamy sense of Nostalgia and melancholy, but also to inspire and display the intense beauty of structures that never came to be.
Let's celebrate the amazing fantasy and sense for elegance and beauty of the past. (up until 1950) Let me take off: Design for the Stock-Exchange of Amsterdam: ![]() http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bestand...msterdam_2.jpg ![]() http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fi...change_002.jpg ![]() http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bestand..._Amsterdam.jpg Designs for the palace of freedom in The Hague: (I whish all of them could have been build) ![]() ![]() And especially: ![]() ![]() ( Source of the images: http://schatkamer.nai.nl/nl/projecte...-vredespaleis#) Feel free to share! |

beautiful historicism!
The impresive thing was that there were real projects to be build, i guess that the project build of the palace of freedom was the first of this list. |

Yes it was, but the architect had to adjust it to make it slightly more cheap, which I think made it turn out slightly more dull than it would have been.
Thanks for the comment! |

Original winning design for the Norwegian parliament by the architects Heinrich Ernst Schirmer and Wilhelm von Hanno.
![]() http://www.novarchitectura.com/2012/...oggi-10-marzo/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Sc...parliament.jpg ... But they ended up building this modest building instead: http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fichier...et,_Norway.jpg

Stockholm
National museum of fine arts on Kungsklippan, proposed 1845. Another design was accepted and the museum was built on another location, Blasieholmen, in 1866. The site for the proposed museum later became an important site for the industrialization of Stockholm. After the industries relocated residential buildings were built in the 1930s. ![]() ________________ A scyscraper was suggested on Blasieholmen in the 1920s. I'm pretty glad it didn't get built (atleast not on the proposed site) since Blasieholmen is quite beautiful as is. ________________ And speaking of Le Corbusier; he had similair plans for Stockholm as for Paris where he (among other things) wanted to turn Old Town into a park and tear everything down. Sadly his ideas caught root in the post ww2 socialdemocratic movement and alot of old buildings and residential blocks were demolished. |

Ljubljana - Cathedral of Freedom (also Plečnik Parliament) was a proposal design for Slovenian parliament in 1947 by nation's most eminent architect Jože Plečnik. Project wasn't realised due to financial difficulties, however its iconic appereance has firmly fixed in the minds of Slovenes and one could say, became a minor national symbol. Among others, Plečnik Parliament is also depicted on the Slovenian 0.10 € coin.
