Glasgow Cathedral required considerable restoration by the mid 19th century, following centuries of relative neglect after the Scottish Reformation. After the west tower and consistory house of the the cathedral were removed in the 1840s plans were devised to rebuild them "in a manner more befitting" the cathedral, some of the schemes also involved extending the north and south transepts, none came to anything

The original west tower and consistory house. This 19th c painting depicts the 'Defence of the Cathedral' from the iconoclasts by the city Trades' House (Guild) in 1579

I see, I guess the site I found it on got confused by the similar names. Shame the rest of the masterplan wasn't built.

Glasgow | University of Glasgow

How about a wee story...

In the 1840’s the University of Glasgow was considering offers from the railway companies for their site in High Street, home to the Uni since the 16th century. John Baird was commissioned to come up with a scheme for Woodlands Hill (where Park Circus is now) in anticipation of the city’s westward expansion.

Due to problems with his design, and subsequent designs, deemed to small and the University’s inability to reach a decision, the offer fell through and on High St they remained, at least for a few years longer. Various schemes were subsequently devised for feuing out the various westend land parcels by their landowners

1855 Woodlands Hill scheme, more or less completed as shown

As a slight aside, this was Wilson’s first scheme for the Free Church College (the tallest tower at Lyndoch) from 1855

The railways still wanted the High St site and ultimately an offer was accepted and the University moved to Gilmorehill in 1870.

George Gilbert Scott’s original, note the different spire

The Gilbert Scott building remained without a s spire until 1879

This gap was filled in the early 20th century with the Chapel and War Memorial

The spire was completed to a design by John Oldrid Scott, Gilbert Scott’s son. This is a promotional piece from the 1911 exhibition
