LOL, I just moved here so I'm not very attached to the place yet. It is very European, with its English architecture, dense urbanism, walkable streets and Washingtonian mansions. Not quite the Meridian, Mississippi charm that I'm accustomed to. Go Ole Miss!

Yes, I do realize I was baited into keeping this thread alive. Well played, mon frere! And yes, I really was stationed in Meridian, and we flew to starkville on several occasions. Nice college town.

Was there for 3 years, loved my job (Navy helicopter Search and Rescue), loved partying in Tuscaloosa (pretending we were Bama students), met my wife there, but it was a little too country for me (I'm from LA). Also did not like the racial tension that always seemed right below the surface in Meridian.

That's definitely here in Starkville too, even though we're one of the more progressive town in MS.

I don't find meridian to be particularly nice either, most people here choose to shop in tupelo or tuscaloosa over meridian as meridian is a little seedy.

Didn't mean to be anti-Europe but when cities don't meet certain criteria(walkability scale, etc) get simply cast aside as "unworthy" of visiting, it comes across as pompous. I think most cities (small, mid and large) have walkable and interesting areas....it doesn't have to be 50x50 blocks of repetitive euro designed streets.

I can think of several cities off the top of my head that are car orientated/sprawling and yet are huge tourist attractions in their own right (ex Las Vegas, Orlando, Miami, San Diego, etc). Honestly it would be very boring if every single city was an exact clone of each other.

Agreed. Outside of many of the East Coast cities, I would consider very few American cities Euro-centric. Probably because most of these East Coast cities were established around the time of English colonialism which influenced the likes of Jefferson, Madison, Washington, etc., whom modeled the architecture and cities after those in England and France. Even walkable cities like Chicago, Seattle, and Vegas aren't very European at all... unless, of course, you consider the Paris Las Vegas Hotel and Casino Euro-centric

Short answer, no. It's constructive to talk about this topic in the context of what cities have the most opportunities to develop an active street level engagement with residents and visitors, but just whining about one's own city or putting down others is hardly useful.
