Old buildings on Lady Bird lake could be transformed

Quote:
By Sarah Coppola Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2012

Austin’s parks department wants to transform three former utility buildings located on prime land along Lady Bird Lake into public spaces.

The department will seek proposals next year from companies or private groups interested in turning the buildings —which sit on the lake’s north shore, south of West Cesar Chavez Street and the old Seaholm Power Plant — into something new.

Developers and parks officials envision the structures containing a lakeside café, juice bar, art gallery, bike or kayak rental business or public gathering space, among other ideas.

“A lot of people have had their eye on this for a while. The setting, both the buildings and grounds, are fantastic,” said Austin developer Perry Lorenz. “With so many people walking by it each day on the (Roy and Ann Butler Hike-and-Bike) trail, it is a phenomenal site. … Any number of ideas would work.”

The buildings sit near a rapidly changing part of downtown. The area includes the Second Street Retail District and blocks that once held the Seaholm plant and the now-dismantled Green Water Treatment Plant, sites that developers will soon start turning into high-rise housing, offices, shops and eateries. (The power plant still stands and will be used mostly as office space.)

New Federal Courthouse opens in Austin

Quote:
By Juan Castillo Dec. 3, 2012

Three years and three months after it broke ground, Austin’s gleaming new downtown federal courthouse opened for business Monday with little fanfare but with some of the inconveniences associated with moving into a new home.

In this case, home is a new eight-story, 252,420-square-foot building of stone and glass bounded by Fourth, Fifth, San Antonio and Nueces streets.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Andy Austin said the $123 million project came in on budget. Construction was paid for predominantly by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

“It’s spectacular,” Austin said. “It’s gorgeous architecture and a beautiful space.”

However, the courthouse opened a bit later than expected. When officials broke ground in September 2009, they estimated it would be completed in three years.

The new facility features eight courtrooms and chambers for 10 judges. It replaces the federal courthouse on West Eighth Street, which closed Friday. Judges deemed the facility, which opened in the 1930s, too small to handle a burgeoning federal docket. U.S. District Judge Sam Sparks said he didn’t know what would become of that building.

White Lodging plans 300 room hotel for downtown Austin

Quote:
By Shonda Novak | Tuesday, September 11, 2012, 01:51 PM

Less than a month after officially breaking ground on a 1,012-room convention hotel in downtown Austin, White Lodging Services Corp. is seeking a zoning change from the city to build a 300-room upscale hotel a few blocks away.

White Lodging, which is based in Indiana, plans to build the hotel on vacant land at the northeast corner of East Fifth Street and San Jacinto Boulevard. The land, comprising one-fourth of a block, has been owned for about 45 years by Austin lawyer Harry Whittington and other family members, Whittington said.

The hotel brand is expected to be announced soon, White Lodging officials said. The zoning change would allow a project of roughly 230,000 square feet, larger than what’s currently allowed.

Indoor skydiving coming to Austin

Quote:
Austin is getting Texas’ first indoor skydiving facility scheduled to open in early 2013.

Austin-based iFLY LLC will build the 7,000-square-foot facility in North Austin’s Austinville retail center, on State Highway 183.

The building features a 14-foot-diameter vertical wind tunnel capable of generating wind speeds of up to 160 mph that are used for commercial entertainment, and for professional skydiver and military training. Indoor body flight mimics the experience of free fall skydiving without the parachute.

Hotel ZaZa Proposed

Quote:
By Shonda Novak American-Statesman Staff

Plans are in the works for a 24-story tower in downtown Austin that would have 215 luxury apartments atop a 160-room Hotel ZaZa, which would mark the upscale boutique hotel’s Central Texas debut.

Executives with Gables Residential and Hotel ZaZa told the American-Statesman that their project would be built on West Fourth Street between Guadalupe and Lavaca streets. Pending a requested zoning change, they hope to start construction in mid- to late-2013, with the project expected to debut in early to mid-2015. Developers did not release information on an estimated pricetag for the project or financing details.

The half-block site, which is just under an acre, is now used for parking. It once housed the Ginger Man pub, which has since relocated, and the Fox & Hound tavern.
