Rainbow Lake and Northern Alberta

so i moved to northwest alberta for work and actually don't mind it, the weather is currently insanely cold with loads of snow that just never seems to stop falling, it's actually quite pretty but ugh

anyway will start with random pics taken over the last 6 months since i've been living here and there

rainbow lake is basically a very small town maybe 850 people in remote NW alberta, about equal distance to BC and and the NWT, it's all oil industry here anyway the pics...

my flight up - landed in grande prairie - 7 hours south of RL...

the summer skies are amazing

hwy 34 - the mackenzie highway which goes up to the NWT

the highways around here are long and flat and straight

a first impression of rainbow lake

"downtown" as some people call it - this is a hotel, grocery store, postal outlet, bank agency, bar and restaurant

spindly trees

heading south

somewhere on the way into edmonton

heading back north

a bridge crossing the peace river

peace river valley

rainbow lake

an amazing sunset

bad fires this past summer - smoke was thick for many days

lots of muskeg up here so trees don't grow too high or well

canola

some pics of grande prarie - a city 7 hours south, about 55,000 people in city limits in a city that is ever expanding and booming

this is the town of peace river around 5000 people, 5 hours south

there is a nice path along the river where you can walk for many miles

at a rodeo/fair near grimshaw ab (abour 5 hours south of RL)

one thing about being so far north we get to see the northern lights - these are from august or september unfortunately my camera isn't very good at capturing them

we got 3 days of snow in mid october than it melted, than around october 20th it snowed heavy for 3 days and has stayed with us ever since
day two of the snow

day 3

what a great expanse of land, it looks like a never ending road going from one place to another and to NWT.

nice photos but just curious - is Rainbow Lake has the color of the rainbow? or why it's called by that name?

so you've move there...the coutryside so far looks good with a lake for fishing and maybe swimming during summertime but winter is really harsh and long.
I 've been to a summer camping site there twice, the exact place I don't remember but I think it's in between the towns of Olds and Red Deer.Going to the camping site is really very warm and dusty.
anyway, hope you get adjusted and enjoy everything that the place offers including your fat salary maybe.
