Cool site -- map showing WW2 bomb sights in London
Interesting that the West End still has lots of its old architecture intact.

Apparently this has something to do with my work, it is all over our staff news page and Twitter feed.

Direct hit on the place I'm living in. Surprised there's so many, some of them must have been very weak bombs as most of the old houses around here are still standing with a few gaps which do seem to match where some bombs hit on the map.
Openstreetmap data is also missing the road right outside my place despite having the names of all the flat blocks along it. If site is displaying 503 error keep trying, you'll get on eventually. |

It's quite innaccurate, or at least imprecise.

Yes, the bomb site opposite us isn't marked.
I was fascinated nonetheless. What a dark time it was for Europe to be bombing the shit out of its cities. It's still hard to grasp the profound loss of life, the vast suffering and loss of so much of our collective history. Having visited many of the places we destroyed on the continent, it just makes me happy that the more obvious scars are now hard to spot. In the 21st century, some of the cities which weren't bombed at all still have wreaked their own destruction on their heritage, so in the end, it's hard to tell which cities were bombed and which werent! |
