For the record I highly doubt EK would launch DXB-AKL non-stop. EK operate 3 x daily A380 services from SYD/MEL/BNE.

Technically it is possible to fly Boeing 777-200LR for such long route. In theory, Boeing 777-200LR can fly longer than Airbus A340-500. But in reality no airline willing to operate their Boeing 777 LR for such extra long distance. Possibly due to financial or safety reason.

Lest there's any doubt as to Boeing's ambition that the new 777X will replace the venerable 747 as the new long-haul passenger flagship:

Massive Construction Underpins 777X plan

ShowNews

Quote:
Flexible 777 production system will build metal and composite-winged variants on same line.

Any doubts about the scale of the changes involved in Boeing’s 777X derivative or the company’s commitment to its new long-haul flagship are quickly dispelled with a visit to the giant construction site in Everett where the aircraft’s composite wing will be built.

Building of the sprawling $1 billion composite wing center (CWC) and the nearby advanced fuselage assembly facility extension for the 777/777X together mark one of the largest single expansion phases for the site since the mid-1960s when the first trees were felled for the start of the 747 program. When completed next May the CWC will cover almost 1.3 million sq. ft., while the expansion of Building 40-27 for fuselage assembly adds a further 325,000 sq. ft. The CWC will have a clear span of 460 ft., more than 100 ft. wider than the largest now.

At the heart of the new building will be three enormous autoclaves for curing the skins and spars of the 114 ft.-long main wing sections. The length of each will be extended for flight by an 11 ft. foldable wingtip section to give the 777X an overall span of 212 ft. 8 in. retracted and 235 ft. 5 in. when deployed. The sheer size of each means the short journey across the airfield to the CWC will take up to four days and concludes with the unit being positioned on rollers into specially prepared sunken foundations.

On a related subject, are we going to have a separate thread for the 777X when it comes out? Or are we just going to continue with this one?

It's a 777, so no need for a new thread.

I will look into that possibility since I run the sub-forum. It's like, I can either:

- Split this thread to allow the 777 Classic (772 and 77W) to have its own thread while having a new thread dedicated to the 777 New Generation (777X)
- Keep it united, but run the risk of having difficult searches later on. However, the beauty of a unified thread is that we can have a continuous discussion of 777 development since the 777X will be developed based on the 777 Classic.

Just let me know if you want to keep it as it is or split off the two.

Huh... if that's possible to buy, I think other airlines should get it too to augment their long-haul fleet (especially for thinner routes that do not warrant the 77W).

Qatar order 10 777-8Xs and 4 777Fs

Boeing, Qatar Airways Announce Order for 10 777-8Xs, Four 777 Freighters

LE BOURGET, France, June 15, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing [NYSE: BA] and Qatar Airways announced an order for 10 777-8Xs and four 777 Freighters, valued at $4.8 billion at list prices, on the opening day of Paris Air Show 2015.

"Acquiring technologically-advanced airplanes such as the 777X is integral to our expansion strategy," said His Excellency Mr. Akbar Al Baker, CEO, Qatar Airways. "With the addition of these 777-8X to the 50 777-9X already on order, we are confident of continuing the tremendous legacy of the 777.

"The order for four 777 Freighters underpins the value that this airplane has also brought to our rapidly growing cargo operations," said Mr. Al Baker. "Qatar Airways Cargo is an integral part of the Qatar Airways Group and we look forward to enhancing the existing fleet with next-generation aircraft."

Design of the 777X is underway and production is set to begin in 2017, with first delivery targeted for 2020. With this order, the 777X has accumulated 320 orders and commitments from six customers worldwide.

It's unclear if this is the 777X order that was booked last week. The 777F order might also already been booked as unidentified in January.

It's also interesting that it's a 777-8X order as Qatar only had the -9X on order.

If I remember correctly Qatar has an additional 50 options for the 777X program on top of the 50 orders it made. So we could see an additional 40 more 777X's confirmed in the future.

Apparently the Qatar order is new, at least the 777-8X part.

The total 777X firm orders have surpassed the 300, that is only possible if this one is new as last weeks total was 296.

It will be interesting to see if we also get a new customer for the 777X.

Boeing should use the airshow as a major selling spree for the 777X program. I am pretty much sure that some airlines could use the 777X as a replacement for their current 777s.

I can only hope that surprise orders will be taken up for the 777 during the Paris Airshow... My impression has been the usual suspects (EK, QR, CX, SQ) making their commitments during the show, but I want even more carriers to order it soon to ensure that the next generation twin engine wide body will be a continued success. Perhaps the airlines I wanna see order the 777 Next Gen would be UA, AA, Philippine Airlines, Air France, and Air China, if not also TAM (Brazil) or Aeromexico.

You forgot Singapore Airlines, IMO it's the most likely to place the next big 777X order. It's just a matter of time before it happens. I believe they are waiting for Airbus' decision on the a380 to decide how many 777X they will need.

He did mention Singapore Airlines, which is SQ, its IATA airline designation.

My personal preference would be have a totally separate thread since the original 777 will be superseded and gradually phased out by Boeing when the 777X comes out, but then that's just me.

You could run a poll on the question, however. Maybe sticky it too while you're at it.
