Boeing 777-200LR have longer range than Airbus A340-500, so in theory it can fly non-stop between SIN-EWR in standard configuration.

What is being questioned by SQ is the economic feasibility.

I'm sure it can (with a standard configuration or maybe with a slight penalty) but maybe SQ is still not satisfied with the operating economics of the 777-200LR as it is much harder to make those ULH routes profitable than shorter routes. That is why they want a more fuel-efficient airplane.

That is very true. Boeing 777-200LR have what it takes, in term of technical aspect, to fly non-stop between Singapore and US.
But judging by recent complain by SQ on how expensive it is to operate A340-500 on non-stop SIN-America route, the Boeing 777-200LR seemed to be affected too as this plane "only" marginally better than its rival.

Would a high density version of the 777-200lr with 10 abreast in economy with 31 inch seat pitch and 7 abreast in business make this route viable?

I think the Boeing 777-8 would be able to achieve such feat... Unless if they can tweak Boeing 747-8i so it can fly almost as long as the Boeing 777-200LR.....

Singapore Airlines previously didn't use 777-200LR might be because that it is limited by ETOPS.

It's more because they already had the A340-500. Those entered their fleet from 2003, about 3 years before Boeing delivered their 1st 777-200LR.

A high density version of the 777-200LR would be too heavy, it wouldn't have the range to do it non-stop.

Yeah, Singapore Airlines did actually showed some interest with Boeing 777-200LR. Technically this airplane would have been easy to operate for airline as it share similar fuselage with existing Boeing 777-200ER, and engine with Boeing 777-300ER in their fleet.

The Boeing 777 is one of my most favorite of the Twin Engine Widebody jets, i call it The Twin Engine Jumbo and its like a beautiful Swan taking off to the skies.

I been on a B777 200 from KLAX to KATL in august 2014 and i have to say it was fantastic i even had ample room and i was in economy class.

And my god the Wingspan how beautiful it looks, also one of my favorite engines of all time and one of the biggest that amazes me the Legendary GE-90 holy cow what power and that a B737 can fit inside the engine wow holy cow how huge and impressive it.

Let's also post this here.

Boeing and Vietnam Airlines has signed a MoU for 8 777-8X.

http://boeing.mediaroom.com/2015-07-...r-Flag-Carrier

The extra range of the 777-8X will give them the ability to fly directly to the east coast of the USA.

That's great news. Way to go Vietnam Airlines. It's quite stunning to see them as the launch customer for the a350 in Asia and now the first in Southeast Asia to order the 777X.

By the way, it's a bit strange that the order wasn't announced last month at Le Bourget.
