Only Qantas grounded their A380 fleet for a longer period of time. Singapore Airlines grounded theirs for 1 day for immediate inspection, further inspections and engine replacements where done after they already started flying again. Lufthansa did not ground the A380, they inspected them 1 by one. It turned out to be a manufacturing flaw on those relatively new engines, and quite a lot had to be replaced.

Age is one of the main differences between the 2 incidents. With RR engines on the A380 being this new when the failure happened it's more likely that it's a manufacturing flaw or a design fault. The GE engine on the 777 is older, it flew much more hours. The likelihood that it's failure caused by some kind of fatigue is much higher. That makes it less dramatic, the chances are lower that it will happen again on short notice. This comes back in the absence of voluntary groundings by airlines of 777 fleet with this specific subtype of engines.

And for now no Emergency Airworthiness Directive has been issued yet as the investigation is still ongoing. You have to know the exact cause to what to fix the error. If the outcome will be such directive we could see delayed groundings.

Air India decides to start direct tri-weekly flight San Francisco - Bangalore covering a distance of 14000 km. This could be world's longest flight taking around 18 hours.

The aircraft used will be Boeing 777 200-LR

As Air India said when they were selling off their 777-200LR aircraft.

Air India had said that the long-range planes were not fuel efficient and that it was losing money on its overseas flights, including to the US and Japan. Airline executives said it lost 1 crore per flight to the US. It lost money on flights to Japan even with a load of 80%.

These aircraft are not much in demand and there are just a little over 60 of them in operations globally, they said.
So Etihad can't be making any money on the 5 they bought off AI then.

Who in their right mind would want to be strapped into a seat for 18 hours straight & top it off onboard an AI flight!

Emirates evidently think its a great idea, they are tipped to order a load of 200LR birds at present while they wait for the 777x to show up. AI seem to have a unique set of 'issues' with the 200LR

Pity Etihad got in quick for the 5 super cheap AI ones before Aer Lingus did...is all I'll say.

Yes there was talk of EK potentially ordering 20+ frames. I was always under the impression EK opted for stretched version & simply capped the seating capacity to enable ULH routes.

Well I guess when money ain't an issue you can order new aircraft in the bucket loads

One question

Why EK doesn't equip their newly delievered/ ordered 777s with Wifi straight from Seattle? Since they are upgrading all their 777s with Wifi now, wouldn't it be easier to have it straight away from beforehand? just wondering.

Probably because they have to retrofit it on too many 777s anyway. Making 1 deal for all planes delivered and on order could have been a cheaper option for them then to have Boeing install it during the assembly of the new planes and a third party to retro-fit it on the current fleet.
