Air India is yet to induct six Boeing 787s out of its 27 aircraft order and has earlier this week decided to take delivery of three Boeing 777-300ERs which it originally ordered in 2005 but deferred the induction. The airline is said to be exploring flights between Ahmedabad-London and from Delhi to Copenhagen and Stockholm. (My Source : post # 16749) http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showth...47144&page=838

Air India to take delivery of Boeing wide aircraft, won't change order

NEW DELHI: Indicating ambitious growth plans for its international network, Air India has decided to take delivery of the three remaining Boeing 777-300 extended range (ER) aircraft from the US aircraft major. The airline had been toying with the idea of converting the order of these three widebody aircraft into 10 narrow-body Boeing 737 max and give them to its low-cost arm AI Express.

"We have decided to drop the idea of changing the order of the remaining three B-777s. We will use them for newer routes," said a senior AI official. The airline is looking at expanding its footprint in the US, where it will open the new route of Delhi-San Francisco from December 2.

Erstwhile AI had ordered 68 Boeing aircraft in 2006 - eight Boeing 777-200 long range; 15 B777-300 ER and 27 B787s and 18 B737 for AI Express. AI has so far got 12 B-777 300 ER and three remained on order which it will now get. For the other Boeings, AI sold five B-777 200 LR to Etihad and retained three of them. It has got 21B-787 Dreamliners and is yet to take delivery of six more. AI Express has got all the planes from that order.

The airline has also decided to take 14 Airbus A-320s on lease so that its old-generation A-320s - which joined erstwhile Indian Airlines' fleet from 1989 to early 1990s - can be phased out. However, given the tight lease market for this plane, the airline will start getting them from 2017 onwards. Meanwhile, a team of top officials from Boeing will meet AI's new chief Ashwani Lohani on October 19 to discuss Dreamliner snags. After a period of relative quiet, AI's Boeing 787s have been afflicted by a series of snags since early last month.

AI's turnaround banks on the Dreamliners and it needs Boeing to improve their reliability as frequent snags in this aircraft have led to a lot of trouble for both the airline and passengers. "Himself an engineer, Lohani is going to ask Boeing to do the needful at the earliest," said a source. My Source : http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showth...259009&page=12

Ethiopian picks the 777X.

Ethiopian Airlines to Buy 15 to 20 Boeing 777X Jetliners, CEO Says

Carrier also considered Airbus’s A350-1000 widebody but deemed Boeing plane better suited its operations

Ethiopian Airlines plans to place an order for Boeing Co. 777X long-range jetliners before the end of the year, the East African carrier’s chief executive said.

The airline could buy as many as 15 to 20 of Boeing’s newest airplanes after also considering the purchase of Airbus Group SE’s A350-1000 widebody, Tewolde Gebremariam said in an interview on Wednesday. The deal would have a value of $7.4 billion at list price, though buyers typically get discounts.

As Ethiopian is a 777-200LR and 777-300ER operator it could mean it will be an order for both the 777-8 and 777-9. Although the CEO says in the article that they are mainly looking at the 777-8, as it fits the specifics for the airline better (hot and high airport in Addis Ababa).

Boeing will be very pleased about this, they need some more airlines ordering the 777X, if it was just to make the leasing companies interested. More orders mean even more orders.

Sad news, I didn't know that Kenya Airways is in such a huge trouble that they need to get rid of all their 777s (including the 3 777-300ERs that they have received for the last couple of years) in order to raise cash. They are apparently in talks with the Pakistani government over the lease of 3 aircraft (I assume that's the 3 777-300ERs, source) and have been working with a british consultant firm to conduct the sale of the 777-200ERs (source).

Looks like the Ethiopian 777X order has made them realise that there will only be the one big long haul operator in East Africa in future and it won't be Kenyan.

But still they are trying to reduce the risk by going for the smaller 777-8X. I believe they can easily convert some to the larger 777-9X if there is demand.

The buzz on the internet is that Delta Airlines is taking over 11 777-200ERs from Singapore Airlines & Scoot.

http://aviationplanning.com/monday-flash-2/

Delta already operates 18 777-200s, both the ER and LR.

It's just 1 source, it will need more confirmation, but if true it will, together with all the new A330s and A350s mean a large addition to the Delta wide-body fleet.

From about a week ago, but I don't think anyone has posted this article on this thread yet:

Analysts believe Boeing will slow 777 production

Daniel McCoy, Reporter
Wichita Business Journal
Oct 7, 2015, 1:42pm CDT Updated Oct 8, 2015, 6:24am CDT

Quote:
As it waits for its new 777X to reach full production in 2020, analysts believe the Boeing Co. may have to trim production of its current 777 to align with what is expected to be less customer interest in the older model..

According to a report from the Puget Sound Business Journal, analysts with Goldman Sachs believe Boeing (NYSE: BA) will have to cut production from its current rate of 8.3 planes per month in a move that would cut into the company’s annual profit.

The analysts’ report estimates Boeing will trim production to five planes per month. (...)

Boeing says it is sold out 777s for 2015 and 2016, and 60 percent sold in 2017.

But Goldman’s analysts believe the long lead times on the 777 and a glut of 122 current-models coming off lease could allow many operators to fill their needs more immediately, rather than wait another two years to see their orders fulfilled.

Their report estimates that Boeing would need to immediately sell another 50 777s, slated for production in 2017, to fill the production line gap to the introduction of the 777X.

Delta also denied that they are buying 11 777s from Singapore Airlines. Claiming that the 2nd prices will go down even further, see the article above, therefor making it interesting for them to wait a bit.

As for the Boeing stock price, that was already inflated because of the too generous dividend payments and stock buy-back scheme's of the previous CEO (McNerney). Now Dennis Muilenburg is CEO, who has more history withing Boeing, even as an engineer, it's expected that more money will go into R&D instead of to the shareholders. Even if it goes down now it's still significantly higher then it was in 2013. Any more reductions will still be just be corrections.

That doesn't mean it will not affect Boeing sales campaigns to fill up the remaining 777 classic production slots. But it should not be turned into something more then it really is. A brand new 777-300ER will still be more interesting for enough customers then an old 777-200ER or A330.

Because it's likely Emirates wants to fly to South America from Dubai, I expect an announcement during the Dubai Air Show of an order for about 30-40 777-8 models. The 777-8's might also be assigned for non-stop flights from Dubai all the way to Auckland, New Zealand.

They already have 35 777-8s on order. Now they only have 10 777-200LRs (which they also use on short non ULR routes), the current order will be enough for their initial ULR growth plans. That market is not that big that they need 70 of such planes. Plus the 777-9 will also have extra range over the 777-300ER, also making more routes possible then what's feasible today.
