Boeing's Ray Conner: Slow 777X orders are just temporary, will rise again

Steve Wilhelm, Staff Writer
Puget Sound Business Journal
Nov 6, 2015, 2:28pm PST

Quote:
Boeing 777X orders may seem to be stalled at just over 300, but Boeing Commercial Airplanes CEO Ray Conner has no doubt they’ll take off again.

In a side conversation after the Nov. 11 delivery of Boeing's 25th 787 to Qatar Airways, Conner said he has few concerns about the languid state of 777X orders. There have been only 20 orders so far this year for the newest iteration of the 777, compared to 34 orders for the current-design 777s.

(...) Right now Boeing is especially focused on winning enough orders of the current 777-300ER model and 777 freighters to keep Everett production running at the current 8.3 monthly or close to it, before the 777X enters full production after 2020.

In mid-October Teal Group Analyst Richard Aboulafia said this focus could haunt Boeing if it undermines demand for the more efficient but more expensive 777X. The 777-9X lists at $400 million, while the 777-300ER is $349 million.

“In its zeal to keep 777 rates high, Boeing is selling the current model at a very reasonable price,” Aboulafia said. “Demand might be sated by the time 777X arrives.”

Conner downplayed that concern this week, and said the key is replacing the nearly 1,200 Boeing 777s that have entered service since Boeing started delivering them 20 years ago.

“Think about fleets in terms of when you bring an airplane in," Conner said, "and when you retire it."

There's a whole wave of planes that will be retired in coming years, which could help create more demand.

He added that the long wait for the 777X jets, which won’t start delivering until 2020, means that it makes sense for people to buy 777-300ER jets they can get sooner, and then save their orders for 777X jets until later.

Kuwait Airways had unveiled some information about their upcoming 777-300ER seating plan :

8 First class
36 Business class
290 Economy class
334 in total

Kuwait Airways have ordered 10 777-300ERs with first delivery taking place at November 2016, their initial plan with the 77W is to replace aging A340s & 777s, so the initial routes might be :
• New York
• London
• Kuala Lumpur
• Bangkok
• Jakarta
• Manila

And, Kuwait Airways have always teased about expansion in the US west coast in the future, so probably Los Angeles will be included soon.

Boeing may increase 777X jet production, jobs in Everett

By Dominic Gates
Seattle Times aerospace reporter
Originally published November 13, 2015 at 4:49 pm

Quote:
A report prepared by a state permitting agency shows Boeing sees the potential for a significant increase in jobs and airplane production in Everett once its new 777X widebody jet comes online beginning in 2021.

A “draft technical support” document, released earlier this month by the state Department of Ecology, shows Boeing wants the option to sharply increase production from 100 of the current model 777 jets built per year today up to as many as 125 of the new 777X jets per year from 2021 onward.

The report also provides the company’s projection that “employment at Boeing Everett is expected to increase by no more than 3,000 employees as a result of the 777X project.”

That’s almost 10 times the expected employment boost discussed in the past.

However, the production rate and employment figures in the ecology-department report represent the upper bounds of the growth Boeing sees as possible rather than what is expected, said Boeing spokesman Scott Lefeber.

“As part of our normal business planning, the 777X program needs to anticipate any and all future possible requirements. Part of this evaluation requires Boeing to take action years in advance to ensure environmental permits, tools and parts are complete and ready to support our potential requirements,” Lefeber said.

Qantas is working with Boeing on the 777X.

Quote:
Qantas eyes non-stop Sydney-New York flights with Boeing 777-8X

Qantas has its eye on non-stop Sydney to New York flights using the advanced Boeing 777-8X jetliner, which the airline has touted as a potential replacement for its flagship Airbus A380 superjumbo.

The direct route would swap the long-standing Los Angeles stopover for a 19 hour 'Harbour Bridge to Hudson' trek, which would not only be Qantas' longest flight but the world's longest.

Qantas already plans to begin flying the smaller Boeing 787-9 from late 2017 but the Boeing 777-8X is very much under consideration.

“We’ve got people that work with Boeing and Airbus – we have worked (together) on the A380, we did a lot of work with the 787 (and) we’re doing work with them on the 777(-8X),” Joyce said.

Oh, so the A330s used for select long-haul flights for now will be replaced with the B77W, especially for the Kuwait-Bangkok-Manila and Kuwait-Kuala Lumpur-Jakarta services? I must say that for both flights, first class will be introduced, especially that the A340-300 that was originally used on both flights only had business and economy classes.

Seems a bit soon to be replacing those Airbus A380s. The expected usable lifespan is around 20 to 25 years, isn't it? By the time those new Boeing 777Xs are added to the Qantas fleet, wouldn't the oldest A380 only be around 15 years old?

Or are they only talking about converting the last eight A380 purchases (currently indefinitely deferred) to 777X purchases instead?

I know! It will arrive way too early for me though, but, I will be able to see it depart, like sending it off on its trip to Delhi.

I believe Boeing have sold 36 current 777s so far this year: 20 777-300ER and 16 777F. It's not surprising that many customers prefer to wait for the 777X.
