In effect, the Boeing 777-9 is the true successor to the 747-400, not the A380. However, American Airlines, Delta Airlines and United Airlines will most likely get the A350XWB-1000 if needed (to maintain commonality with the A350XWB-900's already on order).

This year was mainly about retiring the EK 777-200s that were near 20 years old. They were flown to a boneyard in Arizona or perhaps Mississipi, seemingly now worth more as parts than as a complete frame. Thinking of the 777 as a 20 year old plane makes me feel old. China Southern are scrapping their early frames in China itself. There is a recent pic in this thread of a forlorn CS bird.

Here is one that arrived in Tupelo Miss in November 2014, still in one piece in March.

Confirmed broken up in October 2015

I did not hear of a 777-300ER withdrawal but it takes Emirates a month to white label and debrand a frame on retirement from service.

They are also getting rid of their final A340s as well. I think their disposals this year are around one a fortnight.

American, Delta, and United all operate 777s. United was the launch customer. American operate and United have on order 777-300ERs. Commonality would not be a compelling reason for American, Delta, or United to choose the A350-1000 over the 777-9X. Nor would the 777-9X's advantage in range of the A350-1000's advantage of smaller size. Operating costs and purchase price (on a per seat basis) will be the main factors.

Here's something I don't get to see everyday (despite the fact that it operates a large hub at SFO Airport):

United Airlines B777-200ER, "Star Alliance signature" (reg. N794UA)

It's just me or that Star Alliance livery is quite similar to the Skyteam one?

How are they similar? SkyTeam livery is quite different and actually the best looking one from all the 3 Alliance liveries. Star Alliance's black and white/silver livery is too boring.

It's also strange that in oneworld's livery airline's logo stays on the tail.
