Whats strange, an announcement that is meaningless during an airshow?

Usually it takes a bit longer between a first announcement and actual orders. I don't think it's yet at the stage where the Boeing Board have authorized the sale team to offer it to airlines. They are still talking with airlines to see if there's enough demand.

Anyway, Turkish Airlines is rumored to place an 777X order this airshow. Even without the -10 it's doesn't have to turn into an airshow without any 777X orders.

The length of the 777-10X, if built, would be 80 meters.

Correct. Boeing's Board of Directors have not yet authorized management to offer the 777-10X to customers, so there cannot yet be any orders. If the airlines express enough interest, then Boeing will do more detailed design work and Boeing's Board of Directors will make a decision about whether or not to offer it. I don't expect any 777-10X this year.

It's amazing sight to see Cathay Pacific's Boeing 777-367 with the backdrop volcanoes. Taken in Surabaya from my Singapore bound airplane.

If Boeing will build the 777-10X, then it will perform very much like the simulations indicate.

It was fun to attend the Boeing Centennial Celebration. I uploaded some pictures to Flickr as well as Facebook. Took over 1700 pictures of the event. The Laser show was fantastic.

I always thought that 80x80m is the max for a commercial plane.

So far, no airliners have been built larger than 80x80m and no airports presently have terminals with gates than can accommodate aircraft with wingspans greater than 80m -- except by closing the adjacent gates. Further, terminals and taxiways built in the last 20 or so years have generally been built to accommodate airliners up to 80m long. The operational consequences of an airliner longer than 80m are 1) the taxiway behind the gate would be restricted to shorter wingspan aircraft while the >80m long airliner is at the gate and 2) the taxiway/runway fillets might need to be expanded to keep the landing gear from running off onto the grass during turns.

How is it that they managed to keep the landing gear doors open when the landing gears were already down?

They always put the gear doors down during low/missed approaches. Make it quicker to retract the gear on climb out.
