CollegeAviator, why the duplicate post? Can't you keep the plane spotting to the photos forum? Your post has been reported and should, hopefully, be moved.

Why do UAL order 777-300ER just now, while until today they only have 777-200ER???

May I know comparison between the 200 and 300???

I would imagine that it the forthcoming retirement of the B747-400 from the UAL fleet, therefore the B777-300 would fill the lost capacity.

The 777-300ER is larger then the 777-200ER, it's about 10m's longer. In United's most comparable long haul configurations it's a difference of 100 seats. The 777-200ER has 267 seats, the 777-300ER has 366 seats.

They ordered the 777-300ERs as a fast and cheap (Boeing gave them a good discount) replacement for their 374 seat 747s which are now being retired a quicker pace then planned before this order.

And now to the news.

Boeing said last week that the present slow Wides market may require rate liniting the 777 to an output as low as 3.5 to 4.5 a month until the 777x ramp starts from 2020.

Boeing expects global orders for Wides to remain in the doldrums until 2020 as well. Luckily for them they recently filled out 747 production till then, at current rates.

If my estimations are correct, then Boeing has just about 400+ Triple 7s orders to be delivered. I'm surprised not many airline has yet ordered the upcoming 777Xs! Perhaps cuz they are now busy with 787s/A350s and will consider 777X later?

It's interesting how Boeing changed their tone when it comes to the different product lines and the outlook. First they did have a clear fighting spirit, everything will be fine. Then all the analyst started to paint a very different picture, with issues for the whole wide-body line-up in the near future. Now Boeing has taken over those more modest views, but do they really see it like this, will they actually reduce the 777 output to 3.5 per month.

I don't really think that's the case, I think it's more for the investors that have already started to follow the views of the analysts. There's no gain for Boeing to hold up an overly positive outlook in their interactions with the media. By creating a much more modest outlook any positive news to come will be taken much more positive by the press, the analyst and most importantly the investors.

Example, Boeing has always been positive about the about the future of the 747-8. But when they announced the AirBridgeCargo order, which is indeed a bit of an oddball order, the analyst were still critical, it wouldn't safe the 747 line. Then Boeing changed their tone, reducing their outlook for the freighter market. They even came out with the remark that closing the 747 line was a serious option they were looking at. When they made those remarks they must have already known that the UPS deal was in the making. After that order was announced the analyst where actually very positive, clearly saying that it would keep the production of the 747-8 going into the 2020s. Which creates more opportunities for more 747-8F orders when the 747-400F replacement cycle will start.

Bringing this back to the 777, they are saying that they might have to go down as low as 3.5 777s per month in 2019. But only if there are no more new orders, which is unrealistic. But by having said that any new orders will mean that they will not have to go down as far as 3.5 per month.

It's interesting that they made these remarks in a month with 72 wide-body orders, including 11 777-300ERs. If these 11 are on top of the order total that will bring back the production to 3.5 it would already mean that Boeing could go to 4.5 a month if these 11 were all to be delivered in the same 1 year period. Another 12 orders would then mean a rate of 5.5 per month. And another 12 orders is not something that is completely unattainable, Boeing's gross order total for the 777 this year is 23 (net 17). Many of the recent orders for new wide-body planes had delivery slots within 1 to 2 years after firming them up. In other words, Boeing has 2017 and 2018 to pick up the orders needed to only modestly reduce the production rate. Which will only be seen as positive news compared to the worst case scenarios that are now going around.

Long story short, it won't be as bad as it's now being presented.

ps.
1st available 777X delivery slots are not for before 2021. Airlines are now not in a hurry to place orders. It will pick up in the next 5 years to come.
