KLM to take two more 777s

KLM is to take delivery of two Boeing 777-300ERs in spring 2015, one from Boeing and another from Air Lease, taking its total 777-300ER fleet to 10 aircraft.

It has also extended leases on three 737-800s and one 777-200ER that are already operating in KLM’s fleet.

A KLM spokesman confirmed that the Dutch carrier has ordered one aircraft direct with Boeing. This is due to arrive in April 2015.

The Air Lease aircraft, also a new 777-300ER, will be delivered in March 2015 and will remain with KLM on long-term lease.

The spokesman said that the two additions will take KLM to a total of 10 777-300ERs

Perhaps you'll need to cite the source of your news article to verify its validity, all right?

The 77W has better fuel economics and can carry a bit more passengers than the A346. Plus, there have been a lot of struggles marketing the A345 and A346, especially that even though those can fly long distances, not a lot of airlines were interested in operating it.

It was not just fuel economics, the total operating costs were lower for the 777 then for the A340, mostly because the number of engines. And there was also the A330 that became better and better and therefor became a serious "internal" competitor to the A340. The 777-300ER didn't have such a strong internal competitor as the 747-400 was at the end of sales life and the 747-8 is not that much better then the 777. So the 747-8 didn't have an impact on the 777 sales, it's actually completely the other way around.

Were the 777-300ER killed the A340, the A330 was actually responsible for the end of the sales success of the 777-200 variants.

Would you say the A330 killed the 777-200- not too sure as many airlines do operate both.

The 777-200ER did get a big number of orders of course, but the sales did dry up after the A330 got better over the years and the 777-300ER entered on the scene. The A330 is probably also the reason why Boeing only made an 200LR version with the new wings and not an upgraded -200ER. It simply wouldn't have been able to compete with the A330 since it was too heavy.

I think this is the analogue that happening with airline world today, as they began to search for more efficient aircrafts.

With the arrival of Boeing 777-300ER, major airlines are able to fly long distance route,,and generate large revenue, yet the operational cost is only the fraction of Boeing 747-400.

The same goes to Airbus A330. A330 is a smaller aircraft when compared to Boeing 777-200.

Aspire Aviation article on Boeing, 777X points:
Quote:
- 777X CFRP wing likely to be made in Japan
- 777X CFRP wing could be transported to Everett by ship
- Thrust for 777-9X’s GE9X engine increased to 103,000lbs
- Halting A350-1000′s rise Boeing’s top priority
- 777-9X more weight efficient than A350-1000 & has better seat-mile costs
- 777X Freighter presented to Lufthansa to be available from 2025
full article:
http://www.aspireaviation.com/2013/0...ds-all-fronts/

A decision to have the wings made in Japan could be to lure ANA and JAL back to Boeing after they openly flirted with Airbus about the A350-1000.

It's also the 1st time the 777X Freighter gets mentioned. It will be based on the 777-8X and could be the final nail in the coffin of the 747.
