Not to mention that the latest versions of the A330-300 (the A333E and A333X) can carry more passengers than the 777-200 and can operate with similar ranges, if not longer, allowing fleet flexibility between short- and long-haul routes. Those would be on top of better seating options, in-seat amenities, and better fuel consumption.

The A330-300 would never be able to compete with the 777-200ER range/payload wise. It's just that these days a lot of the missions which the 777-200's (both ER & non) are used on can be operated more economically by the A330-300. The seating options etc don't come into play as that is up to the airline.

Sounds good to me. How about comparing the B772 with the A332: is it a better comparison to start with?

Yes. I recall the A332 could carry a similar number of passengers as a B772 to start with... and the A330-200 has gotten quite a lot of orders lately too.

Going back to the B777, is there a possibility for a B77W to have a range similar to the B77L, if not even further (upwards to like 10,000nm) while carrying a sizable load of passengers and cargo? Or am I wishful thinking on this?

The 772 is larger, heavier & longer ranging than the A332. Though the difference in range is much less between these two when compared to the A333.

As for the 77W being similar range to the 77L, not a chance. Wait until the 777-8X comes out & we will see an aircraft which is close to the 77W in size but with a huge range/payload capability.

Airbus secured a total of 4 net orders for the A332 since January 2012, with no orders in this year. Mainly because of conversions to the A333, many of those conversion came from the 14 net orders in 2011.

The A333 is clearly the model of the A330 that kept the sales alive over the last couple of years. Which is very similar to the 777 program where the biggest model also was the main seller.

The -8X will indeed be the LR version of the -300ER, but many people expect that it will do only as good as the 200LR. Unless Emirates goes on a -8X buying spree the sales will probably just go to about 50 and not much further.

The -9X will also have an increased range over the -300ER, even though it's not that much of a difference it could be enough to compensate for some of the current payload restrictions on the -300ER. Which is positive for airlines like Emirates that operate from hot airports.

TK ups it's latest 777 order by firming 5 options.

Boeing, Turkish Airlines Finalize Order for Five Additional 777-300ERs

ISTANBUL, July 22, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing [NYSE: BA] and Turkish Airlines have announced an order for five 777-300ER (Extended Range) airplanes, valued at $1.6 billion at list prices. The Turkish flag-carrier has exercised options on five 777-300ERs that were first announced in December 2012 as part of a previous firm order for 15 777-300ERs. Turkish Airlines now has 20 777-300ERs currently on order from Boeing.

Turkish Airlines' fleet currently includes 12 777-300ERs, the first of which Boeing delivered in October 2010. In that time, the 777-300ER has played a significant role in Turkish Airlines' incredible long-haul growth.

Does this order replace the existing B77Ws leased from Jet Airways?

I wonder if those are replacements or are they planning on adding more routes to Japan.

They will be an addition to their long haul fleet. I think they will be used on the current routes that are outgrowing the 777-200ERs and the 787s. New routes can then be added using those types.
