Boeing booked 7 new orders for the 777 last week.
http://active.boeing.com/commercial/orders/index.cfm

This could be Qatar firming up the 7 options they announced at the Paris Airshow, it could be something else. Either way, the net order total for this year now stand at 36. It will be interesting to see if this grow close to the 75 net orders that Boeing booked last year for the current models before the 777X order bonanza starts at the Dubai Airshow.

And speaking of the Dubai Airshow, I wonder what the likelihood of Emirates, Etihad, and other Middle Eastern (also add Asian) carriers committing--and firming up--to new orders for the 777X, especially Emirates is a staunch customer of both Boeing and Airbus...?

The likelihood that there will be firm orders for the 777X in Dubai is very close to 100%. Boeing will launch it right there, just like they launched the 787-10 at the Paris airshow. It's more a question of how many orders will be firm, and how many will be commitments.

It will even be more interesting to see who won't be placing orders straight away. Emirates is as good as certain, they have already been named as launch customer for both the -8X and the -9X. Qatar has also shown heavy interest and with Etihads intention to place an order for the long run it's also pretty obvious that the 777X will be part of that deal. If one of them doesn't place an order it might even bigger news then the actual orders.

As for orders outside the Gulf region, there might not be too many at the Dubai Airshow. If we see some commitments before that for an x number of orders for a not specified type of 777 it will most likely be for the 777X. If they are not firmed up at the airshow this could happen at the end of the year rush. We know that Lufthansa is very interested and there will probably be some orders by the major lease companies. We know next year, especially after the Farmborough Air Show in July how popular the 777X will really be.

I see. So it looks like the new long-haul aircraft of choice for LH will be the 777X, as it moves away from the A340 family (A343 and A346). I wonder, though, if it is still going to order more A333Xs and B747-8Is, and what would be the likelihood that the 777X will become the workhorse of LH's and Swiss' (LX) long-haul services...?

Lufthansa is currently studying the 787, 777X and A350 for A340 and 744 replacement but nothing has been decided yet.

I cannot see LH going for the 777X as it is too close to the 748 and, also, too big for other airlines in the LH group. I see them going for the 787-9 and 10X to replace their A343's / A346's and A350-1000's to replace their 744's.

Nah the 787 will be out of the question. The 777x could be done. They did order the 777f for cargo. Maybe the 777f pilots could switch over to the 777x once they have some training and flying under their belts. That would be cool if Lufthansa beat out the Middle Eastern Carriers to be the launch customer for the 777x. Even in Emirates own backyard at the Dubai airshow.

Boeing will make sure that Emirates will get the launch order, but it can easily be joint launch orders just like with the 787-10. If Lufthansa decides next month to order the 777X it will only be firmed up at or after the official launch that will take place at the Dubai Airshow where Emirates will place it's launch order.

As for Lufthansa, they are studying 3 options. It's an open playing field, all 3 options are possible. I would not exclude any of the planes mentioned in the article at this stage. If they were not looking at any of the 3 they would not mention them and they would all fit into the Lufthansa fleet perfectly.

Swiss won't get the 777X for a long time since they will get their 777-300ERs in 2016 and will stay there for more then a decade. It more likely they will order the 787 if they go for Boeing to replace the remaining A340s and A330s.

Id say for Austrian and Swiss the 787 family would suit their long-haul networks perfectly. For LH themselves Id say the A350 series makes more sense.

It's still a question mark, but they sure could.

btw, it's the 777-8X and the 777-9X.

A -10X is not on Boeing's drawing board yet, but if they would design it it would be a completely crazy plane.

that's the second 77W for GA because they skip the PK-GIB registration. I think the third 77W is still in assembly line...
