Etihads move to buy 777LRs from Air India is also welcome news to they're newest partner Jet Airways which would welcome AI cuts in capacity.

If EY purchase the six airframes they could immediately add two more Australia frequencies since three frames are needed for one rotation.

It's Air India who are desperate to sell these planes, so reducing of their capacity cannot be an issue for Etihad. The sale would also allow Air India, depending on the price to finance one or two new 787s.

The only reason why Etihad would take these planes would be the short term added capacity. Either for themselves or for one of their partner airlines.

I'm curious how compatible the AI aircraft would be with the existing EY fleet?

Dude, the suspense is killing me! Who helped design the 777 and never ordered it? If I had to guess, it would have been a mega carrier that's currently a big Boeing customer. Just by juggling the interest in the proposed 777X, I would say it's Lufthansa. That airline is in the midst of a fleet renewal program and has one of the biggest war chest. Did I get that right?

Hi, I'm from Panama and new to the 777 forum.

Not to rain on EK413's parade, but the airline that helped to design the 777 and never ordered it is Qantas, they were in the 8 airlines: All Nippon Airways, American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific Airways, Delta Air Lines, Japan Airlines, Qantas itself, and United Airlines – that had a role in the development of the mighty triple, they were known as the "Working Together" Group inside Boeing.

Greetings!

Yes, 'adair7pty' hit the nail in the head! QF was the carrier which never ordered the B777

Etihad getting the B777-200LR (77L) would be an interesting move because it has been operating all B777-300ER (77W) in its fleet, and adding the B777-200LR could potentially allow the airline to either:

- Mount more Australian flights;
- Add new flights to the United States and/or South America; and/or
- Complement its 77W fleet for its Asian and European services

And I wonder if Etihad will keep the configuration originally by Air India, or will the airline replace it with newer seats and better cabins?

Sorry, but the answer to your last question should be as obvious as can be. Of course they are going to fit their own interior if they buy these planes. They are probably even going to fit 10 abreast in economy, just like in their 77Ws.

The planes will need a full overhaul anyway, even if it was just to check the whole plane to see if the maintenance was done properly and as documented.

Right... But many airlines end up keeping the seating configurations the way those were sold off to them. Yet, I wonder if those will also be fitted with a 2-class cabin or a 3-class version (similar to Air India)? In Qatar Airways' case, it's a 2-class layout; with Emirates, 3-class.

That's correct. However, one of the reasons why Air India cannot fly the 777-200LR profitable is because of the poor cabin configuration. Therefore I believe EY will re-configure the aircraft.

Not only configuration, also galley setup which probably utilises different equipment

If B777-8X can have 353 in 3 class And B777-9X can have 407 in 3 class then if Boeing can launch B777-10X it will hold about 460 to 500 passengers in 3 class and it can compete with A380 which holds about 525 in 3 class.

With the 777-9 already becoming the longest and the widest airliner around it's going to be hard to make it even bigger. Boeing will have to look at a proper marriage between the 747, the 777 & the 787. In other words making a twin engined 787 like plastic plane with a 777-9 sized wings and the classic 747 hump.

That would be a plane that cannot be classified as a 777 anymore.

Pretty exciting indeed... I wonder what the seating configuration will be like, and I also wonder if it will have an enhanced cabin than its predecessors (not to mention new F and J class seats).
