It seems they have 4 77W aircraft on order instead of 2.

They must have placed a lease order before the order for 2 they placed the order with ALC earlier this year. It doesn't show up on the production list on the internet either. So it's a bit of a mystery from who they got this one.

That is a surprise to me too.But I think some of their routes became demanding for this kind of big aircraft

Nope, the ALC 777s will only join the fleet in 2015.

I did find an article from 2011 about the GECAS deal, although the deal was not fully closed back then.

Etihad has always been one of the airlines who were expected to place a 777X order. But this is I believe the first time that they are mentioned to be in negotiation with Boeing to become a launch customer.

Quote:
Etihad may buy 25-30 Boeing 777X, expand 787 order: sources

(Reuters) - Abu Dhabi's Etihad Airways is negotiating a multibillion-dollar order for dozens of Boeing (BA.N) jets including at least 25 of the U.S. planemaker's revamped 777 mini-jumbo, two people familiar with the matter said on Monday.
http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/...99K0E020131021

The order is expected to be announced on the day of their 10th anniversary on 12 November, just before the Dubai Airshow where the 777X will be launched. Next month is going to be interesting with the official launch orders, who will be part of the group of the launch customers?

Lufthansa for Europe launch customer. Etihad/emirates for Middle East launch customers. Qantas and ANA both have shown interest in the 777X now too. ANA today has shown interest.

Etihad will most likely order the 777X but I doubt it will be a launch customer. The CEO of Etihad stated a few days ago he likes to wait until a new model has proven it self.

the 777X is going to be a beast of a plane. It kind of phases out the 747 while providing more then the A350.

hypothetically: If the 787 is the prius of airplanes (fuel efficient, lighter then a normal airplane) .....what is the 777x?

Korean Air has ordered 6 more 777-300ERs.
http://boeing.mediaroom.com/2013-10-...isle-Airplanes

~~~~~~~~
Aspire Aviation has a lengthy article about the 777X
http://www.aspireaviation.com/2013/1...-777x-success/
It's main points:
GE9X thrust increased to 105,000lbs, eyeing 108,000lbs
GE9X water injection increases mass airflow & decreases HPC temperature
GE9X water injection system carries weight & maintenance cost penalties
Boeing 777X to have Al fuselage
777X CFRP wing likely to be built in Charleston due to costs: sources
All in all the design is tweaked to favor Emirates. The extra thrust extends the range to be the same as the A350-1000. The water injection system for the engines is needed for the hot airports, like Dubai.
So the new 777X wings wont be built in Japan?
Alright Emirates lets go with your order of the 777X. EL AL was added to the list of possible candidates for a possible 777X order. But that wont happen for a couple of years.
I don't understand, why Garuda postponed their Boeing 777 operation to Sydney? After the postponement of London route, now this happens.
This will surely brought bad image to the company.
