777X Configuration Changes Revealed

"Span increases, revised flaps and new engine noise-reduction technology alter 777X’s look"

read all about it in this article.
http://aviationweek.com/commercial-a...anges-revealed

They have axed the 787 / 747-8 style engine nacalles, new noise reduction technology will make the engines look traditional again. The wingspan is also growing by 2 ft. to 235.5 ft. is done by widening the wingtips, when they are folded up the wingspan will still be the same as a 777-300ER.

"Emirates Airlines’ requirement for a “thrust bump” to raise maximum takeoff thrust from 102,000 lb. to 105,000 lb."

Why would Emirates care about increasing the thrust that much?

and the 777x is going to kill the 747- 8i.

Dubai is tends to be really hot and air at higher ambient temperatures is lower in density than colder air; So it takes more power or a longer run to get airborne in Dubai than say London or New York even though its near sea level. This is likely a concern for all of the Gulf carriers (as it would be for anyone operating out of say Denver or Quito for altitude reasons) although none have put in an order as influential as Emirates 150 plane order.

And of course the 747-8 is dead, but was dead on arrival as a passenger airliner, The 777-9 is the final nail in the coffin, but even with out only 4-5 airlines have put in fairly small orders. Although I don't see the 777x program having much effect on the moderately successful freighter version.

I think Boeing changed the nacelle design of the 777X for one reason: drag reduction. The sawtoothed rear nacelle design may have reduced noise, but at the possible expense of higher fuel consumption.
