The biggest difference is made by the new engines, they are responsible for a large part of this improvement.

Speed is not really an issue nowadays, today's planes don't go faster then the Boeing 707 in the 1950s.
So the 777x is larger for more passengers and has less fuel burn per seat than previous 777 models. So is that where modern aviation is heading, just based on fuel burn mostly, for the least expensive flights? When I think of future aviation, I'd expect aircraft to be faster for quicker flights. So that a flight from New York to Tokyo will not be 13 hours, but 1 or 2 hours.

Then you're not just have to go faster, you have to go into space.

If we can build something that can land and take off from a runway, yet fly into space at very high speeds, then that's what your looking for. They are known as spaceplanes.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spaceplane

Skylon might be something like that.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skylon_(spacecraft)

But spaceplanes are very expensive and it will take a lot of time to develop. It is the future though.

We also had the Concorde and Tu-144, but fuel costs are very expensive as it takes more fuel to travel at high speeds with the atmosphere in the way. Flying through space will save a lot of fuel by getting rid of drag caused by the atmosphere, as well as less gravity.

Seems as though a lot of us have forgotten about Virgin Galactic

The gravity reduction in low Earth orbit or in sub-orbital ballistic flight is quite small and not really an important factor at all.

Accelerating a craft to the speed required for Earth orbit or meaningful sub-orbital trips, is the main challenge. Remember the Space Shuttle: essentially the same size as an airliner yet it needed two similarly sized boosters and a tank of fuel twice its size to give it orbital speed. The same mechanics still apply so we need a drastic improvement of propulsion efficiency to make it feasible.

Virgin Galactic is only doing very short space flights. It is a step forward, but it will still take a while until one of its craft is able to fly around the world. Hopefully they will also be able to offer flights to other planets as well one day.

The space shuttle was smaller than a Boeing 747. And it only held about 8 people. Imagine what it would take to get a spaceship with the capacity of a Boeing 747 into Earth orbit.
