There have been some news articles about those 777s recently with different options for the 3 remaining on order.

But the consensus is that Air India won't take delivery of them as 3 regular 777-300ERs. One possibility is a conversion of the order into 10 737 MAX for Air India Express. Another possibility is that at least one of the 777s will be turned into the new government plane Air India One. Replacing the Air India 747 that is currently used for this role. The other 2 could then be converted into 737s or even a couple more 787s.

For the price of one B777-300ER you cannot get more than three B737 MAX 8.

That's correct when you look at the list prices. But we don't know the exact contract value of the Air India order for these 777s. And we don't know how much Air India is willing to pay and/or how much discount Boeing is willing to give for the 737 MAX.

We also don't know how much Air India has already paid for these 3 777s, if that's enough for the prepayments for 10 737s there won't be a problem. And we should als not assume that the total value of after the conversion will stay exactly the same.

Boeing press release for the Qatar Airways order:

Qatar now has ordered 12 777Fs int total with 5 still to be delivered. They also bought 4 more purchase rights together with this .

Quote:
Boeing, Qatar Airways Finalize Order for Four 777 Freighters

SEATTLE, Jan. 6, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing [NYSE: BA] and Qatar Airways have finalized an order for four 777 Freighters, valued at $1.24 billion at current list prices. The airline also has purchase rights for four additional airplanes, which when exercised will bring the combined value to $2.46 billion.

Qatar Airways first announced an intent to order the four 777 Freighters at the 2014 Farnborough Airshow.

"As Qatar Airways develops its cargo route network, we are pleased they have selected the 777 Freighter to be part of this expansion," said Boeing Commercial Airplanes president and CEO Ray Conner. "We greatly value the long-term partnership Qatar Airways and Boeing have shared over nearly a decade."

Qatar Airways currently operates a fleet of 37 Boeing 777-300ERs (Extended Range) and 777-200LRs (Longer Range), in addition to seven 777 Freighters.

"We aim to make Qatar Airways one of the world's major air cargo players," said His Excellency Akbar Al Baker, CEO, Qatar Airways. "With its proven track record, long-range capabilities and excellent operational efficiencies, the 777 Freighter will be a key player in enabling Qatar Airways to grow its footprint and economically deliver cargo further, connecting many long-haul destinations from our hub in Doha, especially with the expansion of Doha's new freight terminal."

The 777 Freighter is capable of flying 4,900 nautical miles (9,070 kilometers) with a full payload and general cargo market densities, making it the world's longest-range twin-engine freighter. The airplane's range capability translates into significant savings for cargo operators: fewer stops and associated landing fees, less congestion at transfer hubs, lower cargo handling costs and shorter cargo delivery times.

Boeing is the undisputed air cargo market leader, providing over 90 percent of the total worldwide dedicated freighter capacity.

Global air freight traffic is forecast to grow at an annual rate of 4.7 percent, doubling the cargo traffic over the next 20 years, according to the Boeing World Air Cargo Forecast released in October.

Hmmm, with it being a B777-200LR, is it possible for that aircraft to fly between India and the US West Coast, or will it require a stopover somewhere to reach it?

Technically it's possible, but it economically it wouldn't make sense. Air India are not known for making profits on long haul flights, but even for their standards they would lose to much money with a direct flight.

Which is no secret, Air India has been very open about how they can't make money with these 777-200LRs. They are not getting rid of them for nothing.

Bloomberg reports that United is close to place an order for 10 777-300ERs.

Quote:
United Airlines Said to Prepare Order for 10 Boeing 777s

United Airlines (UAL) is preparing to place an order for 10 of Boeing Co. (BA)’s largest twin-engine jetliners to replace older aircraft plying its longest routes, said people familiar with its plans.

The Boeing 777-300ERs would be the first of that variant bought by United, the world’s second-largest carrier, said three of the people, who aren’t authorized to speak publicly because talks are private

Wow. Finally. After so many years. It looks like UA is finally joining in with the rest of the world in operating one of the most successful long-haul aircraft... possibly to replace a good chunk of both its B747s and B772s? I hope it can order more of that aircraft to bring in a newer, fresher face for the airline... I wonder, however, if it will adopt a 3-4-3 seating layout in Y, and it will sport a whole new F and J class seats?

It's a bit unclear when it comes to their intentions with this order. They already had the A350-1000s lined up as a replacement of their 747s. It could be to replace the 747s earlier, it could also be an expansion of the fleet. As Boeing is trying to fill up the delivery slots before the 777X arrives by giving large discounts it could also be an offer that United simply cannot refuse.
