Expansion of the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia

The expansion project involves converting into exhibition space the eastern wing of the General Staff Building - it stands opposite the Winter Palace.

During the project which is to be completed in 2013 not only about 100 rooms but also 5 courtyards will be turned into exhibition halls of the State Hermitage Museum. The eastern wing of the General Staff building will be dedicated to the arts of XIX - XXI centuries.

Agreed. Good utilization of space and very nice integration in that amazing old palace.

Are the courtyards also going to be used as exhibit space, or only for general circulation and events?

Yes, they are used this way already. They are especially suitable for displaying huge artifacts like ancient colossal statues. For example, there was an exhibition of Herculaneum Antiquities there in 2011-2012 which couldn't have taken place without reconstruction of the courtyards.
As far as I know only ground floor is going to be used mostly as a public space.
