What are the gateway-cities and their slogans ?

A gateway city:

Airport or seaport that serves as the entry point to a country by being the primary arrival and departure point.

In Sweden: Malmö is supposed to be "The gateway to Continental Europe" because of the bridge to Denmark and the ferries to Germany.

In Russia: they say that St Petersburg is the window to Europe (Окно в Европу)

Some cities like Istanbul or Singapore claim the slogan "Gateway to the Orient”"

Which city is the most important "Gateway to the West" is that St Louis, Pittsburg or Omaha ?

Anymore suggestions of gateway cities and their slogans ??

HK - Gateway to China!
Manila - Gateway to Micronesia!
Bangkok - Gateway to South East Asia!

For those coming from Europe and other parts of the globe, New York is the gateway to The United States.

For those coming from Asia or Oceania, it is either LA or SF.

Back in the days Hamburg was the gateway as it was the main port for the Atlantic liners.

But now I presume that Frankfurt is Germany's gateway to the world.

What city Bangkok or Singapore does have the best road, rail, air and sea connections to the rest of Asia?

I think that Hong Kong is the main gateway to Oceania, lots of travellers change flights in Hong Kong and stay over at a hotel to split up the tiring long flights to Australia and NZ.

New York is definately the gateway to America from Eurasia and Africa as they have the highest number in the US of foreign airline comapnies operating at the airports. Also NYC have direct flights to Africa, which many other N. American cities don't have.

9 of 10 swedish tourists visiting America for the first time choose New York. When they go their second time to america they also
choose New York. I personally know many people who have been to America, and they all went to NYC and nowhere else.

Yes, but I think Atlanta & ATL is good competitor. It's also a hub for South America, and it has better domestic and international air connections especially with europe. Am I right ? Road and railwise Miami seems to be the end of the line, but it's probably the most important sea-gateway to the Bahamas and the Carribean with all the cruiseships.

Rotterdam, biggest port in the western world, is known as the Gateway to Europe. It's slogan; I believe; is 'Rotterdam Dares', though I believe that may be outdated. It might be 'Rotterdam World Port' now?

It is, but Frankfurt doesn't have a slogan for that.

Yes, and the dutch explored the world because their advantageus location, which gave them easy access to the atlantic & rest of the world.

Back in the 16oo's it was the dutch that domineered New York & the Caribean and brought goods to Europe-

The heritage of this dutch trade and worldwide exploration is Schipol airport which is a gateway to the world. My small (pop 90.000)city has direct flights to Schipol, so I don't have to go to Arlanda or Kastrup to fly long distance. (I never fly though)

Countries without strategic positions have no major gateway cities (like Sweden) so people have to transit the gateways via other countries which means they spend their money abroad=disadvantage and loss of income for that country. An example is Kastrup Airport used by many swedes, because there is no international airport in south Sweden. (Don't think you can count Sturup as that, mainly charter flights there)

Actually, we weren't as succesful in the new world as we were in asia. In asia we had a true monopoly, in the new world we weren't in as dominant a position.

Schiphol *is* one of the biggest airports in the world, true. In the world top 5 airports for international passengers. However, the airport can quite easily be compared to other similar airports in terms of size and traffic; but Rotterdam dwarfs any other port in the western world; it's more than twice as big as Europe's 2nd largest port.

I don't know. Miami receives the largest number of international flights in the country, and is the main gateway for Latin America into the U.S. Not to mention the port of Miami as well, large Spanish speaking population in the city, etc. I think Miami >>>>>>>> ATL. But ATL is definitely is a major transit hub for aviation, and probably the second most international city among the South's major cities.

Both Bangkok and Singapore are well connected by air through other parts of Asia. Railway connections between Asian countries are less sophisticated compared to Europe so rail won't be an issue.

Sydney would be the gateway to Oceania since it is closer than HK. But this more apply to Polynesia and NZ.

On the other hand, many tour packages that involves both Guam and Palau usually have a stopover in Manila and travelers would spend the night here.

New York is definitely the gateway to the Americas for those coming from Europe, The Middle East and Africa.

As with this symbol,

But for those coming from Asia and Oceania, definitely San Francisco though LA tends to be a more popular gateway destination.

New York is also well connected with major Latin Americans cities by air. And it seems to act more of a gateway to this region compared to Miami.

Miami is close to The Caribbean and is a gateway to this region by sea, the fact is a a major cruise ship hub.

But many from The Caribbean also head to NY since the city does have a significant population of Dominicans, Jamaicans and Puerto Ricans.

NY is well connected, but Miami reigns supreme. I'm not talking about just immigration numbers, but cultural, economic and transport connection to the region as well. This is where Miami has the advantage. 69% of its population is Hispanic. It's the Latin American hub for multiple companies such as Visa & Harley Davidson. Its financial district Brickell has offices for multiple Latin American banks, and MIA acts as a focus airport for passenger and cargo for LAN airlines. The Port of Miami has the highest amount of trade with Latin American nations of any port in the country.

So with all that taken into consideration I'd say Miami is the largest gateway in the country to Latin America.

Also for Latin Americans DFW is a great option to America. At least for brazilians like me, its NY, Miami and Dallas, but first Miami and NY.

DFW does not really have as many direct flights to Latin America compared with either Miami, Atlanta, or Houston although it is a really strong contender.

Actually one interesting factoid is that Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport serves more destinations in Mexico than any other airport in the US, and is the 8th busiest international gateway ahead of Washington-Dulles (IAD) and Dallas-Ft. Worth (DFW).

Marseille is the French gateway towards the Mediterranean and a main gateway of the Mediterranean to France and Europe. The main urban redevelopment project now underway in Marseille is named City of the Mediterranean.
