Yes, and in the days of the French colonial empire it was known as Gateway to the Orient and Gateway to North Africa.

Rotterdam is one of Europe's most vibrant and multicultural cities, has got a beautiful (but small) skyline and a population of ~620,000. It was the world's busiest port since 1962 until 2004 and nowadays only remains as Europe's largest. The situation of Rotterdam is very strategic, at the mouth of some important European rivers (the Rhine-Meuse-Scheldt Delta), that's the reason why Rotterdam often is being called the "Gateway to Europe".

But many from The Caribbean also head to NY since the city does have a significant population of Dominicans, Jamaicans and Puerto Ricans.
Miami International Airport is still the second largest gateway in the United Staes after JFK. Second largest international destination in the country.

Miami had 49% of the US-South American market in 2011 and the largest connecting point between the Americas and Europe.

Miami, the gateway to the Americas.

Well Miami together with NYC. I have done some air ticket search how to get to Buenos Aires from Europe and the scanner almost always sends suggestions via those two cities and shows very few if any direct flights from Madrid, Paris or Amsterdam to Buenos Aires, strange that it's cheaper to travel from Europe via North America to Argentina, also Dallas is an option that often pops up.

Egypt isn't a city. Cairo, gateway to MENA?

I guess Cairo can be considered to be the gateway to North Africa, but thanks to Emirates and Qatar Airways I would say that both Dubai and Abu Dhubi are more of a gateway city (and Istanbul as well if you consider Turkey to be apart of the middle east) than Cairo.

Compared to LAX or SFO?

Eventhough Vancouver is closer, maybe Seattle has the best airway connections with Alaska ?

Geographically, you have a point; Vancouver, Canada (Gateway to the Canadian Pacific), is indeed closer to Alaska, but geopolitically, Seattle is the gateway to Alaska. In winter, the Alaska Fleets dock in Seattle (Deadliest Catch), our hometown airline is Alaska Airlines (it's more than just airline connections), we have an Alaskan Way Viaduct (for now). Seattle won the premiere Pacific American Northwest pennant race by being the "Gateway to Alaska" during the Yukon Gold Rush in the late 1890's. In 1909, Seattle staged its first World's Fair, known as the AYP Exposition (Alaska-Yukon-Pacific). And, for more silly reasons, some of my friends from Alaska refer to their home state as Seattle's largest suburb. Yep, gotta inject a little dorky humor.

In Colombia, Barranquilla used to be known as the "Golden Gate" of Colombia (La Puerta de Oro de Colombia). Located where the Caribbean meets the Magdalena River (the main waterway in Colombia) almost everything and everyone who entered Colombia would have passed through Barranquilla.

With about 2 million inhabitants, it's presently is the biggest city in the Colombian Caribbean Region, and the fourth biggest in Colombia. But its Port is no longer the most important in Colombia, being superseded by Cartagena (also in the Caribbean) and Buenaventura (in the Pacific).

Although other cities have tried to claim the title (Kansas City, Denver, etc.), St. Louis is and has always been the true original "Gateway to the West". The famous St. Louis Gateway Arch, known the world over, is testament to this.
