Fortress Tvrđa in Osijek,Croatia

One of the biggest fortifications in the region.

Most of the walls were destroyed in 1920. but some walls that look on Drava river still stand. There is also a part of the fortress called Crown fortress on the other side of the river. It is assumed that there is a tunnel that goes under the river, connecting these 2 parts.Few days ago started an exploration of tunnels under fortress so we might find out does that tunnel exist.

Main part of the fortress, still has the same shape of the streets.

Solovetskiy Monastery, Archangelsk Region of Russia

Solovetskiy Monastery, founded in 15th century in the far North of Russia, was built as a genuine fortress - to withstand attacks of Swedish and other armies. The most notable siege of the monastery lasted 8 years - from 1668 and until 1676. The monastery was then besieged not by foreign but by Russian Tsar's troops as the monks refused to accept church reform of Patriarch Nikon. The monastery was captured after 8 years due to the betrayal of one of the monks, because it could not be taken by force.

Later the monastery was used also as a prison both in Tsarist and in Soviet times. Today it is a monastery again.

Note the walls built not of bricks but of huge stones.

Nice thread!

Fenestrelle Fort, Piedmont, Italy

The Fenestrelle Fort is a fortress overlooking Fenestrelle, Piedmont, northern Italy. It is the biggest alpine fortification in Europe, having a surface area of 1,300,000 m². Originally built by the French to a design by Vauban beginning in 1694 and enlarged by Savoy between 1728 and 1850, it guards the access to Turin via the Chisone valley, and stands at altitudes between 1,100 and 1,800 m. The territory was acquired in 1709 by the Duchy of Savoy (later known as the Kingdom of Sardinia) after the defeat of the French at fort Mutin (Fenestrelle).

This is stunning. The aerial view allows the appreciation of the symmetry and the clusters of domes.
