Aviationweek came with some interesting news today.

Airbus is offering to build an A330 completion center in China, probably in Tianjin, says a manufacturing industry official, as the European airframer steps up efforts to promote the type as an answer to China’s shortage of pilots, technicians and airspace capacity.

In return for the completion center, Airbus is asking China to commit to buying a large number of A330s, possibly 200, says the official.

This offer comes with the launch of the A330 Regional at the Beijing Airshow late last year, which has not resulted in any orders yet. The promise to move part of the production to China will be welcomed by the Chinese government who will have to approve of any new order. But 200 is a big number, that could be a bit too much to approve with the current slow down of the economy.

It does show that Airbus still has big plans with the A330. First more and more news about the imminent launch of the A330neo and now this major Chinese deal. But they will need more orders to keep the line(s) busy with the current production speed. The current backlog runs until 2016 and a A330neo is only expected after 2020, that's a big gap to fill.

Airbus targeting early 2015 service entry for A330 Regional

Airbus stated (13-Feb-2014) it is moving forward with development of the new A330 Regional – a lower-weight A330-300 variant for use on domestic and regional routes in high growth areas that include the Asia Pacific market. The aircraft will be optimised to seat up to 400 passengers in a two-class configuration on missions up to 3,200 nm. Airbus stated the aircraft will deliver cost savings through a reduced operational weight of around 200 tonnes and reduced thrust engines, forecasting an overall seat-mile cost reduction of 25% compared with today’s long-range A330-300 variants. Since the announcement of the 'Regional' version in 2013, Airbus has been coordinating with engine manufacturers to deliver further maintenance cost reductions in order to meet optimal levels for regional services. The variant’s certification is a key priority for Airbus in 2014, enabling an early 2015 service entry.

Aerolineas Argentinas acquires four new A330-200s

Aerolineas Argentinas signed (12-Feb-2014) a purchase order for four new A330-200s, the first time in the carrier's history four new aircraft have been purchased, according to CEO Mariano Recalde. No delivery or deployment details were announced. According to the CAPA Fleet Database, the carrier's long-haul fleet is currently comprised of three A330-200s and 12 A340-200s and -300s.
