China To Announce Large A330 Contracts In March

February 28, 2014

Quote:
China will announce large contracts for the Airbus A330 next month, say two industry officials familiar with the negotiations.

Orders or intended orders for at least 70 and possibly 200 A330s will be revealed when President Xi Jinping and other leaders visit France next month, the officials say. The exact number remains undetermined, and the aircraft may not immediately go into Airbus’s books as definitive orders.

They will be among a huge quantity of airliners that China is expected to announce its intent to purchase this year. The country has not finalized its aircraft supplies for the 2016-20 planning period, so CFM Executive Vice President Chaker Chahrour expects announcements this year covering 800-1,000 aircraft. Around 80% will be for narrowbodies, Chahrour told reporters at the Singapore air show this month. That implies an unfilled Chinese requirement for 160-200 widebodies.

Another manufacturing industry official expects China’s announcements this year to exceed 1,000 aircraft. To a large extent, these forthcoming orders are already in manufacturers’ production plans, though they must deal with the uncertain split between competing airframes and engines.

Why? Just because you like those two types of planes?
It's a little more complex than that.

The 777-300ER has a capacity of 350-450 passengers, which is way to big for most of the domestic routes (probably the area of operation for most of the ordered planes). The A330 with a capacity of 250-350 is much more suitable.

I'm 100% sure we will soon hear about a huge 777X order from China. These a330's are probably going be deployed on medium/short haul routes (East Asia, Indian subcontinent).

The A330 is a very popular aircraft in China for it is used in so many flight types, from domestic to long-haul international. And, the aircraft type can be found in many Chinese carriers, including:

• Air China
• China Eastern
• China Southern
• Haikou Airlines
• Sichuan Airlines

And by the way, the A330 can efficiently carry a lot of passengers on much less fuel (compared to the B747 and B777), something that China wants to continue developing over time for it is becoming one of the largest aviation markets in the world. Not to mention, not all Chinese airports can support a daily B777 service; the A330 could bring sufficient ridership for domestic journeys, especially during peak holiday seasons.

That is true. I'd say that the B77W is best suited for China's trunk routes, including:

• Beijing–Shanghai (Hongqiao and Pu Dong)
• Beijing–Guangzhou
• Shanghai–Guangzhou

Other domestic destinations from PEK, SHA, and CAN can be sufficiently served with A330s... The following cities get to see the A330 regularly (outside the three cities I've mentioned):

• Chengdu
• Chongqing
• Haikou
• Kunming
• Lanzhou
• Lhasa

The next thing I wanna ask: what would be the seating configuration for those A330s (both the -200 and -300)? And will those have modern in-cabin amenities like PTV and AVOD across all classes, AC power on all seats, WiFi, lie-flat seats in F and J classes, etc?

The regional A330-300 will have room for up to 400 seats in a two-class configuration.

These aircraft will mostly fly 500 to 2,000 nm routes (with a limit of 3,200 nm), therefore I doubt they will have in-flight entertainment and/or full-flat J seats. There will be no F class either. AC power is a possibility.

Airbus has delivered new A330-300 aircraft to Skymark Airlines, the first two aircraft out of a total of ten on lease for Japan's national airline. With the latest delivery, Skymark Airlines becomes the first carrier in Japan to operate Airbus's A330 wide-body aircraft.

Another success for the A330 MRTT!

Quote:
Singapore to buy Airbus refuelling tankers for air force

(AFP)

Singapore — Singapore said Thursday it would replace its ageing KC-135R air refuelling tankers made by US firm Boeing with Airbus's A330 Multi-Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) aircraft.

Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen told parliament of the decision to acquire the MRTT, which is based on the civilian A330 plane.

Ng did not say how many Singapore will buy, but an industry source said in January the city-state wants to buy six MRTT aircraft in a contract worth an estimated one billion euros ($1.4 billion).

The Singapore air force operates a squadron of KC-135R air refuelling tankers, according to The Military Balance 2014, published by the London-based International Institute for Strategic Studies.

By 2030, "our current KC-135 aerial tankers will have been replaced by the Airbus A330 Multi-Role Tanker Transport, which we have decided to acquire," Ng said during a debate on the country's budget.

"The MRTT, or Airbus A330, can hold 20 percent more fuel than our current KC-135s and will extend the range of our fighters through air-to-air refuelling," he said.

"The Airbus A330 can also double up as a cargo and troop-lift aircraft to deploy troops and equipment to overseas sites further away as we have done in HADR (humanitarian and disaster relief) operations."

IHS Jane's Defence Weekly says Airbus has won orders for the MRTT from the air forces of Australia, Saudi Arabia, Britain and the United Arab Emirates.

Boeing's KC-135, which began flying for the US Air Force in the 1950s, provides mid-air refuelling services for long-range bombers, fighters and cargo aircraft.

Boeing in 2011 beat its European rival for an estimated $30 billion contract to replace the US Air Force's ageing fleet of KC-135 tankers with the newer KC-46 aircraft, with the first deliveries expected in 2017.

Just for comparison:

An A330 MRTT is being refueled by a KC-135.
