Would someone please explain to me why an airline - for reasons other than cost - would buy an A330neo rather than an A350? They both are the same size class and range. Is it really just for airlines who can't afford the A350?

A350 is 3m longer but also seats 9 abreast standard whereas the A330-300 is 8 abreast. So the extra length and seats is probably getting near 50 seats. Additionally A330 is suited to shorter hops.

I think the one of A330 maybe for lion airlines indonesia. Because will be cobvert the narrowbody aircraft to widebody aircraft.
FYI IF Widebody landing in indonesian airport they will receive discount 50% for fuel because the fuel in indonesia very expensive about 1 euro in one litre of aircraft fuel

That's absolutely false. Maybe, you also think that B777 and B787 are also the same.

A330-800: Length 58,8m - Range 7.450nmi - MTOW 242 tons
A330-900: Length 63,7m - Range 6.200nmi - MTOW 242 tons
A350-900: Length 66,9m - Range 7.750nmi - MTOW 268 tons
A350-1000: Lenght 73,9m - Range 7.990nmi - MTOW 308 tons

Sorry, I wasn't clear. I'm talking from the airlines operating point of view (i.e. the customer's), rather than the technical dimensions.

A330-800: 252 pax (2-class) - Range 7,450nmi
A350-800: 276 pax (2-class) - Range 8,260nmi

A330-900: 310 pax (2-class) - Range 6,200nmi
A350-900: 315 pax (2-class) - Range 7,750nmi

A350-1000: 387 pax (2-class) - Range 7,990nmi

So, my point is: why bother neo-ing the A330s when the A350-800 could do the same job as a A330-800, and an A350-900 could do the same job as an A330-900? Wouldn't an airline just buy A350-800s and A350-900s if they wanted to carry 250-280 and 300-320 passengers, respectively, over those distances? Is it just a cheaper alternative?

The A330neo family is perfect for medium routes... The A350 family is perfect for long routes

The A350-800 has been terminated, that gives room for the A330-800 in that size category, especially as it's directly competing with the 787-9.

At the end of the day it's a combination of all these factors:
- price (the neo is cheaper),
- performance on short to medium haul missions (the neo doesn't carry the weight needed for the longest A350 missions),
- availability (there are more neo slots available and earlier then there are A350 slots),
- fleet communality (the neo is not that different from the A330 ceo's in many fleets, it's an easier transition to the neo then to the A350),
(in all the factors above "A350" can be replaced by "787")

The A330 will simply be a very good plane that can still be compatitive with the new A350 and 787. Will it get as many orders as the A350 and the 787? Probably not, but that won't make it not successful.

I see a whole extra row in Y in the middle/wing section, and an extra two Y seats at the back left side before the galley.

If I were to gauge the range for those aircraft from Manila...

- The A330-800 could fly Manila-Los Angeles without any weight penalties (and with time to spare) -- it could even fly to San Diego or Johannesburg
- The A330-900 would be a good choice for Manila-Addis Ababa nonstop, if not Istanbul or Honolulu
- The A350-900 is a great aircraft if we want to do Manila-Winnipeg nonstop, if not anywhere in the EU or up to Johannesburg (also applies to the A350-1000, with just a 240nm range difference)

If I want to do Manila to...

- New York/JFK (8520nm)
- Dallas/DFW (8320nm)
- Chicago/ORD (8131nm)

Then I would need either a stopover or a more powerful aircraft than those.
