The configuration and decor of Tibet Airlines' A330 is exactly the same as Air China's.

And no, it's not necessarily true that Tibet Airlines is "serious" in long haul routes. Beijing is forcing many smaller airlines to go international regardless of whether it makes sense or whether slots are even available or not. Lucky Air, Juneyao Airlines, Shenzhen Airlines, Donghai Airlines amongst others are being egged on to take delivery of 787s and A330s.

What the? Seriously? So let me get this straight: if I board a Tibet Airlines A332, whatever seat configuration I see with Air China's A332, that would be exactly the same with Tibet? Why not repaint it with Air China instead so that I won't be confused with what I'm getting for the flight instead of having exotic regional names that mainly do domestic services?

As for going international, yes, they can do regional services to beef up demand, but not long-haul services immediately since those use up more fuel, require longer work hours, and cost more on overhead and maintenance. Sounds like CAAC wants to expand its presence overseas, but not realizing how much such long-haul flights will cost them (unless, of course, it is a business strategy to send out more Chinese tourists overseas). However, what I don't understand is route exclusivity: what I mean is, for example:

Air China does Beijing to San Francisco, and soon, Shanghai to San Jose

Hainan Airlines does Beijing to San Jose

China Eastern does Shanghai to San Francisco (which uses a mix of 332 and 77W)

China Southern does Guangzhou and Wuhan to San Francisco

Is it true that once an airline signs up to do such routes, no other Chinese carrier can do so for long haul services? That would be more prominent if we look at the enormous number of Chinese flights serving Bangkok...

In a nutshell, yes.

Honestly, once you understand the dynamics of the Chinese airline industry, those so-called "exotic regional names” no longer sound that exotic.

Essentially, it’s a form of risk-sharing between either of the big 4 (China Southern, China Eastern, Air China and Hainan) or their big subsidiaries, and the local provincial or municipal government. This allows domestic and/or international routes to/from cities that would otherwise never have been launched due to concerns about its commercial viability.

Regarding route exclusivity, you have to remember that China is still largely a planned economy and this is reflected in its aviation policy. The big 3 are all state-owned anyways so technically, it doesn’t make sense to allow the airlines to compete, cannibalise and uncut each other. To your question, it’s traditionally true but Air China, being Beijing based and directly linked to CAAC, is the only exception. It can apply for long-haul routes even though another Chinese operates it, for example, Shanghai-Frankfurt.

Having said that, things are slowly changing, and CAAC is slowly opening up markets for competition which began with domestic a decade ago, and now Asian regional routes. On the Chengdu-Bangkok route alone, there are quite a few Chinese carriers competing with each other.

Seven A330's in Toulouse, and four 777's in Everett. Saudia has a lot of new planes coming.

New capacity or trying to keep up with the neighbors in the Middle East?

A330-300 Regional?
How the real costs advantage over 789?

Airbus delivers world’s first A330-300 Regional to Saudi Arabian Airlines

Quote:

Saudi Arabian Airlines, the national carrier of Saudi Arabia, has taken delivery of its first A330-300 Regional, making it the launch customer for this new member of the versatile and successful A330 family. The aircraft is the first of the 20 A330-300 Regional aircraft ordered at the 2015 Paris Airshow, and joins Saudi Arabian Airlines’ existing Airbus fleet of 12 A330-300s and 50 A320 Family aircraft. Specially optimized for regional and domestic operations, the A330-300 Regional will boost capacity on several of Saudi Arabian Airlines’ most in-demand routes, enabling the airline to generate additional efficiencies while offering its passengers an unprecedented comfort level. The A330-300 Regional also represents the lowest-cost alternative and easiest fleet addition due to its high commonality with the A330s already operated by Saudi Arabian Airlines.

Saleh bin Nasser Al-Jasser Director General Saudi Arabian Airlines, said: “We are excited to welcome the first A330-300 Regional to our fast expanding Airbus fleet. It is a step forward in recognising our commitment to a family of aircraft which has contributed immensely to our market growth. The advantage of operating the new regional version of such a popular aircraft with proven operational flexibility and lowest cost per seat means unbeatable economics for our business and our customers.”

Saudi Arabian Airlines will lease the A330-300 Regional fleet from the International Air Finance Corporation (IAFC), a leading lessor in the Middle East.

Moulay Omar Alaoui, President and Chief Executive Officer of IAFC, said: “IAFC has always been a pioneer in introducing innovative Islamic financing solutions to the aviation industry, positioning itself as a strategic partner with unique products and services. We are proud to partner with Saudi Arabian Airlines and Airbus and are confident that this deal will further reinforce the leading position of Saudi’s national airline.”

“We congratulate Saudi Arabian Airlines for becoming the launch customer and operator of the A330-300 Regional. We are convinced our most popular wide-body aircraft will play an instrumental role in supporting the regional network expansion of the airline.” said Fouad Attar, Managing Director of Airbus Middle East.

The A330-300 Regional is optimized for missions up to 2,700 nm (5-hour flight) covering short to medium haul routes and offers significant cost savings through a reduced operational weight of around 200 tons. The reduction in fuel burn per seat and maintenance costs will result in an overall cost reduction of around 20% compared with today’s long-range A330-300.

So how is it achieved? Derated engines would be one. What else? Fewer tanks?

A340s are out of production in 2011 and i saw lufthansa wikipedia it doesn't show that they have any new A340-600 on order not even 2nd hand purchase or wet lease from other airline. Do you have any link to that ? @georgetgonzales
