RwandAir takes delivery of first A330, eyes A350 XWBs RwandAir has taken delivery of the first of two long-haul, widebody Airbus A330s—an A330-200—becoming the launch operator of the type in East Africa. The Kigali-based carrier also has an A330-300 on order, which will be delivered in November.

“One additional brand new Boeing 737-800 will also join our fleet in the same month,” RwandAir CEO John Mirenge told ATW at the delivery ceremony.

The A330-200 is configured in a three-class cabin layout with 20 seats in business, 21 in premium economy and 203 seats in economy class. The aircraft, which is powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 772B engines, will launch Kigali-Dubai services from next week.

“Tapping into the long-haul market is a big step for a small carrier,” Mirenge said. “We are planning services to Mumbai; Europe, especially to London and Paris; and flights to China,” he said.

He said the A330 brings the carrier to the next level of expansion.

RwandAir currently transports around 700,000 passengers annually, but Mirenge said he expects numbers to rise to more than one million after the two A330s are put into scheduled services.

Mirenge told ATW the carrier is also evaluating adding two A350 XWBs to its fleet within the next 24 months.

“We are looking to spread our wings into New York,” he said, declining to further comment on a possible A350 order, but ATW understands talks are moving forward.

He said the carrier is well aware that the small country of Rwanda “cannot fill those planes [like an A330]. It can only be Rwanda’s capital Kigali serving as a hub,” he said. “If I look at the future, most likely 80%-90% of our passengers will be in transfer.”

By 2018, a new $600 million Bugesera International Airport in southeastern Rwanda should become operational. The new airport will have a 4,200-m runway and initially will be able to handle 3 million passengers per year, a figure that could rise to 4.5 million passengers upon expansion.

Asked if it is risky starting long-haul flights to Europe as a small, unknown carrier, Mirenge said: “It has been not easy flying within the African continent itself. There are established players all over the continent. But over the last five years we have been able to win market share. We are presenting our passengers quality of service, new aircraft, on-time performance and [a good] safety record. Because of that, we have been able to win market share and grow 20% every year,” he said.

Mirenge expects RwandAir will operate 16 aircraft over the next five years as the company moves forward step by step.

RwandAir currently operates a fleet of four Boeing 737-700/800s, two Bombardier Q400s, two CRJ900s and one A330-200. Source : http://atwonline.com/airframes/rwand...eyes-a350-xwbs

I Feel, I love the Air Asia X livery on the A330. The A330 program is like the 767 program is that the fact that customers still want to order both planes. A program that never dies. Nice job Airbus.

Well NEO just means new engine option so whole body of A330Neo will be same as current A330 with new A350 style winglets and few changes to cockpit
