The BLADE project – which stands for “Breakthrough Laminar Aircraft Demonstrator in Europe” – is tasked with assessing the feasibility of introducing the technology for commercial aviation. It aims to improve aviation’s ecological footprint, bringing with it a 50% reduction of wing friction and up to five percent lower CO2 emission. Airbus’ A340 Flight Lab is the first test aircraft in the world to combine a transonic laminar wing profile with a true internal primary structure.

On the outside the aircraft is fitted with two representative transonic laminar outer-wings, while inside the cabin a highly complex specialist flight-test-instrumentation (FTI) station has been installed. The extensive modifications to the A340-300 test-bed aircraft took place during the course of a 16-month working party in Tarbes, with the support of numerous industrial partners across Europe. Today’s first-flight marks the kick-off of the Blade flight-test campaign to explore the wing’s characteristics in flight.

According to CNN Hawaiian Airlines is rethinking it's A330-800neo order. The slow sales of this model is one of the reasons why they are now also looking at other models from Airbus as well at the Boeing 787.

http://money.cnn.com/2017/10/06/news...neo/index.html

As they want to use these planes on ultra long routes, for example for direct flights to London, they be better of with the A359 or 789 which simply have a longer range. Hawaiian Airlines is now the only customer for the A330-800, if they convert or cancel their order it will mean that Airbus will not have any orders left for this version. But Airbus is still going ahead with the A338, they have started with the production of the 1st parts for the 1st prototype.

Hawaiian Airlines--fearing that the A330-800neo could become an "orphan" plane--is now seriously looking at buying the 787-9 instead.

Aer Lingus have either 7 or 8 (depending) A321LRs on order and IAG is now threatening the AL Unions that they will give them to their A330 LCA Operator Level instead. The A321LR is ideal for thinner winter routes ex BCN.

Bloomberg reports that AirAsiaX is reviewing it's A330neo order, possibly converting it completely to the A350. Even a switch to the 787 is also considered.

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/artic...order-to-a350s

The reason for this possible switch is a need for larger planes. If they go 787 it will mean the 787-10, as it's the only model which is larger then the A339. But it's more likely if they ditch the A330neo they will go all A350, with both the A359 and A3510 as larger options then the neo. And if they switch it will mean they will switch all orders.

Their first neo is now scheduled for delivery in December 2018. If they switch it will mean a very big blow to the A330neo program as AirAsiaX is the largest with 66 orders out of 212 neo orders in total.

The A330neo program cost how much? €2? €3bn

The engines alone cost at least €1bn to develop. 4 test a/c (2 of each variant I assume) c. €300m each inc test programme.

When the launched the neo Airbus gave an estimation of $2 Billion for the development costs.

I don't think you can put an exact number on the development costs of the engines as they basically the A330 version of the Trent 1000 engines from the 787. So the development costs for both version will have a big overlap.

Maybe €2bn then. They only need to sell 400 frames at €50m clear profit each to cover the marginal development costs. If Air Asia convert then their chances of ever selling 400 frames are quite low to my mind and they will not sell 200 at €100m profit each either.

The customers who signed up are looking at a low run frame and crap residual values by 2025...even with high commonality with the CEO. Squiffy bottoms all around.

A350 is the new king of Airbus besides A320.

But 2bn development cost we are looking at here is puny.
I would not worry about not recovering that. Besides A330 MRTT is also based on NEO version? Or the new AWACS?

They sold what???? 8 of both varieties??? It is negligible even at the daft prices that militaries pay for kit. Anyway I thought the MRTT was a ceo variant.
