Philippines
With a total land area of 244,000 hectares, Davao is considered the largest city in the world.
Approximately, Davao is 7.8 times the size of Cebu and three times that of the entire Metro Manila. There were some talks before to divide the city into three cities, but some officials were against it. “We would loss our claim as the world’s largest city,” someone contested.

If you consider Metro areas by actual built up area, then New York takes the lead, with it's 20 million people living on more than 10,000 km² of built up land.

I didn't understand what this thread is about. The size of metro area, urban area, municipality? The first post is confusing.

As Chrissib said, New York is the largest urbanized area in the world with 12,000 km² where about 20 million people live in. In Brazil, Altamira, Pará state, with 105,030 inhabitants it's the largest municipality in the country with 159,696 km².

Look at the link i posted above. The main problem is: there is NO worldwide definition of what a built up area is. That's why we had to measure by ourselves (google maps). The results were: NY could be the largest if we count the big rivers separating the city as contiguous (for me it is NOT). For me the biggest one-size-urban-sprawl in the world (where at least 50% of the area beeing build up) is L.A. because it is completely build up without interruption.

Tokyo is about 3/4 the size of NY or LA and has a lot of areas with very low build-up density (in fact less than 50%).

The only other candidate was Shangai and its neigbour cities. The question here is if yes or no we can count the whole area as contiguous. It seems that it will soon be contiguous.

So as you see, is it not as simply as you think... ;-)

First of all: what is the definition of an inner-city? Are you sure you did compare each city for saying Tokyo or Shangai?

That's nice but that's not a definition

We can't compare other cities to the chinese ones using this word...

Not only there isn't a common definition of what a city is, but also different countries have different jurisdictional arrangements that make using administrative boundaries pointless, often, when one is to compare 'size' of inhabited areas.

To complicate things further, the spatial organization of cities are different across countries. There are many borderline situation that would count in or count off depending on the country/region.

What is "inner city"? Is it measure by density? Because if that's the case, São Paulo's urban area = São Paulo's inner city, comprising therefore about 20 million people.

Yes. And you will agree with me hat this is completely useless because only based on administrative definition who vary a lot beetween countries and says nothing about the size of the urban area.

No, because each city is measured by the specific country's standards and put into a list combining all of them.

But there are though several possible disputes in size, like Lagos is suppposed to be 6-7 km bigger according to the government then what it officially is.
