Uou! THAT'S a renewal!

Do you have more information about how this was done, how many people affected? Were they removed by the land price rise?

I just... don't have any word. Amazing.

Swede Hollow was a mostly Swedish slum on the east side of St. Paul, Minnesota

It is now a park:

From what I could find on the subject, they were just evicted in 1956 and the police came and poured gasoline over the whole neighborhood and set it ablaze because the conditions were so bad. At its peak there were about 1000 families living there

Oh. I assume they were also rehoused somewhere else. Anyway, good thing it's gone

Indeed.

The people were removed either by selling their houses or waiting an appartment from the local council, in a newly built area.

The success lies in the location of the site. Nearby there is a 2100 years old theatre for 5,000 people which is also undergoing archaeologic excavations. There is a historic mosque of over 600 years old, and nearby, just above all these (from where I took the pictures) is the Fortress of Ankara, on a rock.

These slums are located just in the centre of Ankara, so turning this region into a local/national attraction would be a great advantage for everybody.

The project itself is part of a larger project of transforming Ankara:

Some of these redevelopments are amazing, both in terms of modernisation and the sheer size of them.

Australia has a few small projects where dated 1960s public housing estates have been torn down and replaced with mixed housing, but nothing on the scale of some African, Brazilian and Portugese redevelopments on here.

Some of these conversions are mighty nice. I like how some of them are more than just turning the area into tower blocks, the examples in Ankara and St. Paul are brilliant!

Hey guys,
I think slum areas are not good to live and survive, it brings poverty in country. I think converting Slum into public housing is good to be followed in every country. with this change you can change your society.

The ones in Sao Paulo are delightful But I'm not too keen on the ones in Angola. It's good that they are building these apartments, but they look quite cheap and poorly built to me. They look like the Soviet Commie blocks, or the ones built in the UK and America in the 1960's. I just hope they don't become urban vertical slums.

Though it looks a bit awkward in Sampa's case as with public housing and a CBD on the other side of the river.
