Archaeology: recovering our origins

If I was a millionaire, I'd be an archaeologist. The picture, of course, is a joke. When you take an archaeology class in college, one of the first things that your professor will tell you is that archaeology is nothing like Indiana Jones and his actions would be considered borderline criminal if he was a real person, nevertheless it succeeds in inspiring students to take archaeology classes.

Anyway, my fascination with archaeology started when I was 6 years old and found an old book that belonged to my great-great-grandfather who was an archaeologist. It had pictures of ancient Egyptian tombs and artifacts.

A monumental discovery took place in Ukraine recently. The sword of Svyatoslav of Kyiv, under whom Ukraine had reached its greatest extent in 970s, was discovered on the bottom of the Dnipro river. It is the oldest artifact of national importance.

There have been several major archaeological finds in Bulgaria, you can see some of them in my signature in the "Treasures of Bulgaria" thread.

The most recent find was a Thracian treasure was discovered in Bulgaria over the last 2 days in a burial mound in northeast of Bulgaria. The mound is still not fully excavated.

Dating to the III-IV centuries BC, it was crafted by the Getae, a name given by the Greeks to several Thracian tribes inhabiting the regions to either side of the Lower Danube, located near the UNESCO protected Sveshtari tomb
