For today, yet another multi-showcase... from my Flickr and Photobucket collections.

Part 1: during the BART strike at El Cerrito Del Norte BART Station, from Photobucket. Typically, the park-and-ride lot would be full of commuters; it looked like there were no cars left last Tuesday because most of them have already gone home, and no one was there to pick anyone up... and the bus stops were arranged differently.

Part 3: at Richmond Amtrak Station, from Flickr. This station is served by four Amtrak-branded trains:

- the California Zephyr between Emeryville and Chicago (once daily each way)
- the Capitol Corridor between Oakland or San Jose and Sacramento or Colfax (multiple daily)
- the San Joaquins between Bakersfield and Oakland/Jack London Square (multiple daily)

The Coast Starlight train between Seattle and Los Angeles also passes by the station, but does not stop at Richmond. Board this train in either Martinez (next station up) or Emeryville (two stations down).

Part 4: various transit vehicles at and around the Temporary Transbay Terminal on day 1 of the most recent 4-day BART strike. Fortunately that day, I was prepared with my alternate travel plans since I was traveling around San Francisco only, not heading to the East Bay. With that advantage, I knew that Muni Metro was running that day, so I took the streetcar instead to university. However, I wanted to see the impacts of the strike on the ground, so I walked towards the Transbay Terminal for a closer look...

Thanks for your thoughts! On your question regarding frequencies between buses to destinations like Hercules, it depends on where you board the bus, actually... the company that operates buses to Hercules would be WestCAT (which also includes the cities of Pinole, Rodeo, Richmond, and other nearby communities in western Contra Costa County), and there are two ways I know of to get to Hercules by WestCAT:

- from San Francisco (at the Temporary Transbay Terminal), you can take the Lynx, a commute-oriented service that operates between San Francisco and Hercules. Scheduled departures are roughly every 15 to 30 minutes during peak periods, with a less-consistent pattern middays. Fortunately, this service operates in both commute and anti-commute directions during peak times (AM peak to San Francisco, PM peak to Hercules), and it operates basically all day between the City and Hercules Transit Center.* The cost per ride is $5.00 for adults, $2.00 for youth, seniors, and handicapped. More information

- from El Cerrito Del Norte BART Station, you choose from any of these buses that operate to Hercules Transit Center:
-- the JL and JR, branded as "express" (the express segment is between Richmond Pkwy & I-80 and Cutting Blvd & I-80), in which the JL operates via Hilltop Mall and Lakeside Drive, while the JR operates via Richmond Parkway. Both routes operate via San Pablo Avenue, serving Downtown Pinole and Downtown Hercules en route. Nighttime and on weekends, these routes are extended to serve Willow Avenue & Viewpointe Drive in Hercules. The two routes operate all-day, everyday (including holidays), with departures of up to every 15 minutes weekdays and every 40 minutes weekends and holidays, from around 5am to 12:30am.
-- the JX is an express service that only stops at Del Norte BART and Hercules Transit Center, and it operates weekdays only during peak commute times in both directions (roughly between 5:15am and 8:30am, and then between 3:30pm and 8:00pm). Operates around every 15 minutes.
-- the JPX is a semi-express service that operates between Del Norte BART and Hercules Transit Center via Pinole Valley Road and San Pablo Avenue. Operating in tandem with the JX, it also operates weekdays only, with midday departures every 60 to 75 minutes, and peak period departures up to every 15 minutes. Additional note: some JPX trips continue on to and from Martinez, the county seat of Contra Costa County, as Route 30Z. It is located some 15 to 20km east of Hercules, via Highway 4, and it runs express along the highway with local stops within the City of Martinez. This route also operates all day, with departure intervals ranging from every 30 to 75 minutes.
