Today, I will show you just how popular biking is in the Bay Area, in terms of how full bike parking areas are...

In San Rafael, at the San Rafael Transit Center:

At Stanford University, Palo Alto:

I even made a short video showing how Stanford students get around... (To view the video, click on the image)

A classic scene: an F-Market PCC streetcar parked near the Ferry Building. Guess from which city the streetcar in the picture is from:

Sadly, it's not from Toronto, TB. Yours is maroon and gold. Try again!

So the streetcar in question is from Detroit, MI. Yes, the Motor City has had a streetcar system before the Interstate Highways covered the city.

So, let me introduce another transit agency -- make that two transit agencies.

Golden Gate Transit is the transit agency that serves the North Bay, particularly Marin and Sonoma Counties (up to Santa Rosa). It has around 200 buses in its fleet, and it is progressively introducing WiFi on board all of its buses, as well as a new radio system with automated voice stop annunciators that will allow the visually- and hearing-impaired passengers to listen or watch their stop appear on a screen. As of today, it operates six basic routes (four to San Francisco, two to the East Bay) and over twenty commuter routes.

Marin Transit, on the other hand, is a mid-size transit agency based in San Rafael, California. It operates bus, shuttle, and rural routes, all of which are contracted to Golden Gate Transit, Marin Airporter, and MV Transportation, respectively. It operates ten bus routes, four community shuttle routes, and two rural services (as well as many school day-only trips and the seasonal Muir Woods Shuttle), all of which are within Marin County only.

Let's do another guess the streetcar... From which city does this streetcar livery give tribute to:

Weird? Really? You've seen only a fraction of what other weird vehicles you might see here! Thanks a lot though for your honesty.

You never know, BART might be my next featured photo!

Cyberpunked, huh? Yeah, that's what you get with North America's (especially the US) policies on transportation safety: you'll get such weird designs as the above poster commented, from lights to front view mirrors to even the seats and luggage racks. As for the streetcar, really, you think it's from a movie or a game?

You've made me laugh this morning, which is great! Thanks a lot... More on the way!

I'm only used to these kind of city buses:

http://s8.gva.be/ahimgpath/assets_im...1000x800-n.jpg

and some old streets cars of us look a bit like your old ones:
http://www.allesoverantwerpen.nl/fot.../foto-tram.jpg
http://blogimages.bloggen.be/metrotr...d53d0aa5a0.jpg

but most look like this:

or this:

and these older ones:

But anyway it's great to see so much funny diversity

Definitely not the types I see around here. Even the Van Hool buses look a bit different too. I really love the modern trams, though... I don't know if the boarding height for street boarding would be compatible here in San Francisco...

Well, if you love trains, then today is the day that I'll introduce Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART). Yes, that regional train service that acts as a hybrid subway service (in San Francisco, Oakland, and Berkeley) and commuter rail service (in the suburbs). Despite its large network, it does not operate 24 hours a day, everyday: rather, it runs from 4am to midnight (rolling closures until 1:30am) on weekdays, 6am to midnight (rolling closures until 1:30am) Saturdays, and 8am to midnight (rolling closures until 1:30am) Sundays and Holidays. In fact, what replaces it during the overnight would be the All-Nighter bus services that serve many BART stations.

With 44 stations on five lines, BART serves as the heart of a larger transportation network that serves four counties. And as of today, the agency is constructing a southern extension of the service — currently terminating in Fremont — to serve Santa Clara County, particularly Milpitas, San Jose, and Santa Clara, three of the county's largest (if not principal) cities. In addition, the rail agency will also extend service, called eBART (because it will use conventional rail service, different from its normal wide-gauge service), on the northeastern portion of Contra Costa County, extending its reach from Pittsburg and Bay Point to Antioch and Brentwood, two of the county's fastest-growing communities.

There are several aspects to BART that I want to share, including the trains, stations, features, and connections. With my album, I will do my best to share all of them in series. And, a little hint: I've already explored the entire 44-station network of BART through a series of trips.

First of all, the train configurations on BART do vary according to time of day, line used, and expected ridership. During weekday peak periods, trains between 6 and 10 cars are pretty common; during weekday off-peak, trains as short as three cars operate, and these can be found on the Richmond — Fremont line. On weekends and on many special events, BART will often operate longer trains to accommodate demand, sometimes to a point that eight- to ten-car formations run right next to each other.

More descriptions soon, so enjoy my first batch of BART pics!

It's in Portuguese, though, so I can't read them. But, of course, you can share your system pics (e.g. Vehicles, stations, etc) with mine so that we can compare and contrast them together. Perhaps if you can help me with Portuguese, then we can work things out.

What's the connection between Australia and San Francisco? A streetcar! Yes, San Franscisco has a streetcar from Melbourne (number 496), built in 1928 originally for the Melbourne's streetcar network, and it was eventually bought by San Francisco Muni (along with streetcar 584, kept as a spare) in 1984 after Melbourne finally retired this streetcar type for more modern versions. In 2009, a sister streetcar, number 916, was purchased also from Melbourne; this streetcar, however, is undergoing renovation. This is my tribute for Australia Day today, by the way.

Let's introduce another transit agency and yet another transit hub: San Jose Diridon Station is the main transit hub for San Jose, the largest city in the San Francisco Bay Area (no, it isn't San Francisco at all, with a population of 805,000; San Jose's population stands at around 970,000). Multiple transit agencies operate to and from Diridon, the main ones being:

• Altamont Commuter Express (commuter rail for Stockton via Pleasanton)
• Amtrak (Capitol Corridor, Coast Starlight) - also Amtrak California Thruway Bus
• Caltrain (for San Francisco, San Mateo County, and Gilroy)
• Monterey-Salinas Transit (for the Monterey Peninsula)
• Santa Cruz Metro (main operator of Highway 17 Express for Santa Cruz)
• Valley Transportation Authority (includes buses, DASH, and light rail)

Today, I will be showing you Caltrain and Diridon's rail platforms.
