Boeing 737 MAX LEAP-1B Begins Extensive Flight Test Program

Powerplant for Boeing's newest single-aisle airplane on track for engine certification in 2016

RENTON, Wash., May 7, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing [NYSE: BA] and CFM International announced today that they successfully initiated flight testing of the LEAP-1B* engine on April 29 on a modified 747 flying testbed at GE Aviation Flight Test Operations in Victorville, Calif.

The testing is the next major milestone in a two-year program that will culminate in engine certification in 2016 and delivery of the first Boeing 737 MAX in 2017. The engine performed well and completed multiple aeromechanical test points at various altitudes during the five hour, 30 minute first flight.

"I continue to be really impressed with the LEAP," said Chief Test Pilot Steven Crane, CFM International. "These engines are demonstrating a maturity that you don't always see in new products. I think our airline customers are going to be very pleased with this engine."

The LEAP-1B engine is the exclusive powerplant for the Boeing 737 MAX family and is part of the most extensive ground and flight test certification program in CFM's history. The first LEAP-1B engine began ground testing on June 13, 2014, three days ahead of the schedule set when the program was launched in 2011.

"With this major engine milestone and the test results to date, we continue to be confident that the LEAP-1B-powered 737 MAX will provide our customers with the most fuel efficient, reliable and maintainable airplane in the single-aisle market," said Keith Leverkuhn, vice president and general manager, 737 MAX program, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "The 737 MAX is on track to deliver 14 percent more fuel efficiency than today's most efficient Next-Generation 737s and 20 percent more efficiency than the first Next-Generation 737s to enter service."

Over the next several weeks, the flight test program will encompass a comprehensive test schedule that will gauge engine operability, stall margin, performance, emissions and acoustics. It also will further validate the advanced technologies incorporated in the engine, including the woven carbon fiber composite fan, the Twin-Annular, Pre-Mixing Swirler (TAPS) combustor, ceramic matrix composite shrouds in the high-pressure turbine and titanium aluminide blades in the low-pressure turbine.

"The LEAP engine has been doing incredibly well throughout a very rigorous ground and flight test program," said Allen Paxson, executive vice president, CFM International. "Results to date are right in line with what we predicted and where we wanted this engine to be."

To date, the 737 MAX has accumulated 2,724 orders from 57 customers worldwide.

* The LEAP-1B is a product of CFM International, a 50/50 joint company between Snecma (Safran) and GE.

After Boeing's monthly order update we now know when exactly COPA placed their MAX order. The 1st 2 smaller, previously unidentified orders were already placed in 2013.

Those 2 orders were probably only placed to secure early delivery slots, with the final price only being negotiated with the large order placed this year.

Most of the other unidentified orders still remain unknown, except for a couple of Chinese orders that just add up with the numbers and date placed. But as the early Copa orders show it doesn't mean that every single unidentified order equate to a single order by 1 airline. Airlines will have placed several smaller orders, some of them have already an identified larger order, but probably not all of them.

Ruili Airlines will become a large 737 operator.

The article makes it sound like it's a new order, but if you read further it could also be that the MAXs of 2 of the unidentified orders that could have been placed by these 2 Chinese leasing companies have found this airline as a customer.

We'll know with the next couple of order updates, if they include large orders for 60 in total we know that it will be a new order.

Boeing Wins $6.1 Billion Plane Order From China Carrier, Lessors

Boeing Co. won a commitment from a Chinese airline and two aircraft-leasing companies for single-aisle jets valued at 38 billion yuan ($6.1 billion) as carriers in the country expand their fleet amid a surge in travel demand.

Ruili Airlines signed the agreement with Minsheng Financial Leasing and Avic International Leasing for 60 737 Max models, the carrier said in an e-mailed statement dated Monday. The price of a 737 Max ranges from $87.7 million to $113.3 million, according to the website of Boeing.

Boeing Starts Assembly of First 737 MAX

New single-aisle airplane on track for first delivery in third quarter 2017

RENTON, Wash., June 2, 2015 – Boeing (NYSE: BA) employees in Renton, Wash., have started building the first 737 MAX on schedule. Last week, employees started to assemble the wings for the first 737 MAX flight test airplane. Wings are the first 737 components to be assembled in the Renton production process.

“Employees in Renton are the best in the world at building single-aisle airplanes and now this world-class team is building the future with the first 737 MAX,” said Keith Leverkuhn, vice president and general manager, 737 MAX. “Achieving this milestone on schedule is a testament to the success of the 737 and our integrated design and build team.”

Machine operators loaded 737 MAX wing skin panels and stringers into the new panel assembly line that uses automation to drill holes and install fasteners in the upper and lower wing panels. Mechanics also loaded the initial parts of the first 737 MAX spars – internal support structures in wings – into automated spar assembly machines. The unfinished skins, stringers and spars were machined by Boeing Fabrication Skin and Spar in Auburn and Fredrickson, Wash. When finished, the panels and spars will be transformed into completed wings.

“It’s really exciting to be starting something that you know is going to be in the future and that you are going to be building,” said David Dowell, 737 mechanic. “I’m looking forward to it and future growth.”

The wings will be attached to the first 737 MAX fuselage on the new Central line in Renton Final Assembly later this year. The new production line will allow the team to isolate the first 737 MAX build from the rest of production in order to learn and perfect the build process while the Renton factory continues to build at a rate of 42 airplanes a month.

The 737 MAX incorporates the latest technology CFM International LEAP-1B engines, Advanced Technology winglets and other improvements to deliver the highest efficiency, reliability and passenger comfort in the single-aisle market. Beginning in 2017, the new single-aisle airplane will deliver 20 percent lower fuel use than the first Next-Generation 737s and the lowest operating costs in its class – 8 percent per seat less than its nearest competitor. To date, the 737 MAX has 2,720 orders from 57 customers worldwide.
