initial 787 designs were less conventional but later switched to more conventional ones.

Yes, we are in 21st ceturies, when Air Canada scratches the paint out of their planes to save on fuel, so I would rather expect more silver planes based on existing designs like 739-900ER in order to discontinue 757, Airbus A350 strongly based on A330, 787 landing near ordinary 767, 777-200LR, 747-8 etc, rather than originally painted sophistcated aircraft. Saving on whatever possible

BOEING | 737 News & Discussion

The 737 made it's 1st flight on April 9, 1967, 46 years later it's still going strong with record number delivery rates and orders.

With the new MAX versions going over the 1,000 orders a dedicated thread it's a good moment for a dedicated thread.

Today Boeing announced the last order of 2012 for the 737 for the lessor Aviation Capital Group.

50x 737 MAX 8
10x 737 MAX 9

Bringing the total MAX orders to 1,029.

Boeing 737 MAX Gets Milestone Order from Aviation Capital Group

SEATTLE, Jan. 2, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing [NYSE: BA] announced today an order by Aviation Capital Group (ACG) for 60 737 MAX airplanes. ACG's order, consisting of 50 737 MAX 8s and 10 737 MAX 9s, was finalized in December 2012. The 737 MAX has now accumulated more than 1,000 orders to date.

"This order is a major step in building our broad portfolio of modern, fuel-efficient airplanes," said Denis Kalscheur, chief executive officer of ACG. "The 737 MAX enables us to offer our customers airplanes that provide the fuel efficiency, reliability and passenger comforts needed to grow in tomorrow's marketplace."

The order, worth $6 billion at current list prices, further illustrates the strong demand for the 737 MAX in the airplane leasing industry.

"We are proud of the confidence that ACG has placed in the 737 MAX," said John Wojick, senior vice president of Global Sales, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "The 737 MAX will deliver to ACG's customers unsurpassed efficiency in the single-aisle market as well as improved environmental performance."

The Next-Generation 737 is the most fuel-efficient and reliable single-aisle airplane today with an 8 percent per-seat operating cost advantage over the nearest competitor. The 737 MAX builds on these strengths with advances in fuel-efficiency and environmental performance. Equipped with new LEAP-1B engines from CFM International and improvements such as the Advanced Technology Winglet, the MAX reduces fuel burn and CO2 emissions by 13 percent while maintaining the 8 percent operating cost advantage over future competition.

These efficiencies have powered the 737 MAX to the impressive order milestone. With ACG's order, the 737 MAX has orders for 1,029 airplanes from airlines and leasing companies worldwide.

"Reaching 1,000 orders in just over a year's time from our first order validates the exceptional value the 737 MAX offers our customers," said Bob Feldmann, vice president and general manager, 737 MAX. "Customers are expressing confidence in our ability to deliver improved performance on schedule."

Thanks for setting it up! I think it's better to call it the B737 New Generation thread since what's on production now include the -700, -800, and -900 variants (and its sub-variants).

Boeing released the final orders and deliveries numbers for 2012.

Gross Orders: 1,184
Net Orders: 1,124
Deliveries: 415
Unfilled orders: 3,074
http://boeing.mediaroom.com/index.php?s=43&item=2552

On the last order update the 60 737 MAX for ACG where added together with 40 for an Unidentified Customer and 2 for the US Navy.
There were also 25 cancellations.

The 40 new Unidentified orders are also for the MAX, but 5 of the cancellations were also from an older unidentified customer. This 5 are the 1st cancellation for the MAX, since it's an unidentified customer we don't know and probably will never know who cancelled them again. Edit, the order for 40 737s could also have been 35 MAXs and 5 NGs, that's probably more likely then a cancellation of 5 MAXs.

The total number of MAX orders is now 1064.

Question: what's the difference between Gross Orders and Net Orders? Is it like, Gross Orders are orders being processed at the moment, while Net Orders are aircraft that have been delivered?

Gross orders are all new orders in a year.
Net orders are the new orders minus the cancellations in a year.

Originally announced as a commitment for 12 737 MAXs.

Boeing, Icelandair Finalize Order for 16 737 MAX Airplanes

REYKJAVIK, Iceland, Feb. 13, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing [NYSE: BA] and Icelandair announced a firm order today for 16 737 MAX airplanes, valued at more than $1.6 billion at list prices. The order, originally announced as a commitment for 12 airplanes in December 2012, has been increased to 16 airplanes and includes 737 MAX 8s and 9s, as well as purchase rights for eight additional 737 MAXs. Today's announcement brings the total number of 737 MAXs ordered to date to 1,180.

"The 737 MAX will complement our Boeing 757 operations seamlessly and allow us to continue our route expansion in the most fuel-efficient manner," said Bjorgolfur Johannsson, Icelandair Group president and CEO.

The 737 MAX builds on the strengths of the world's best-selling Next-Generation 737. The 737 MAX incorporates the latest-technology CFM International LEAP-1B engines to deliver the highest efficiency, reliability and passenger comfort in the single-aisle market. Airlines operating the 737 MAX will see a 13 percent fuel-use improvement over today's most fuel-efficient single-aisle airplanes.

"The 737 MAX will be an excellent addition to Icelandair's all-Boeing fleet, enabling the carrier to expand its operations across Europe and North America with increased fuel efficiency, route flexibility and passenger comfort," said Todd Nelp, vice president of European Sales, Boeing Commercial Airplanes.

The Icelandair Group currently operates an all-Boeing fleet of 23 Boeing 757 airplanes for both its passenger and cargo operations. The Icelandic carrier has used the geographical location of its Reykjavik-based hub mid-way between North America and Europe, as an opportunity to build an ever-growing network of more than 35 international destinations.

Now that is interesting since Icelandair has maintained a very stable fleet of B757-200s, and with several orders for the B737Max, it looks like the Icelandic carrier can operate to even more destinations in Europe and N America... perhaps its range could be outdone from the 757 that it might replace its oldest aircraft.

I sense that Icelandair will send those to Europe, if not N American destinations. By the way, what is the projected maximum range that a 737Max can cover? Will it be similar to a 757 or further, or will it be similar to a B739?
