Boeing seem to be producting a Max Test frame a month nowadays, will there be a fourth Max 8 or will the first Max 9 test frame come before a fourth Max 8 test frame ??

Nope. 1A004 will be 4th and last 737 MAX8 test frame, while 1A005 will be first production frame (will be used during certification too) and first to be delivered to Southwest. All 4 test frames will be later re-worked and delivered to Southwest.

Boeing sold another 8 737 NGs last week, again to an unidentified customer.

I think Ryanair will need a few more NGs before they launch the 737 Max-ASCC for Boeing in 2019. Now would be the time to order them, and they might order 2-4 -700s for a change.

Ryanair now has 1 -700 in their fleet which they used for training, but now also for VIP charters. Unless they want to expand in that business I don't see them ordering -700s. And even if they want to do more in that direction they can always hold on to some of the 737-800s that otherwise would leave the fleet.

The 737-700 is too small for their normal operations, they always want more seats to sell.

They do want to expand it, yes. It is a 60 seater VIP all biz class in winter and a 149 seater in summer BTW.

Going international

The 737 MAX continues to be right on track—and will soon be going international for flight testing. Our third MAX airplane took its first flight today. Meanwhile, airplanes #1 and #2 have now completed over 50 flights combined. We’ve wrapped up everything from low speed stability and control tests, to flutter testing—which the head of the MAX program describes as “whisper smooth.” Looking ahead, airplane #2 will soon head down to La Paz, Bolivia for high altitude testing. That will mark the first international trip for the MAX test fleet.

And airplane #4 will soon emerge from our factory configured in a full passenger interior, before heading across the globe to complete other testing.

We look forward to continue putting the MAX through its paces here at home— and all over the world.

From twitter, the 737-8 max was in PTY.

Looks like the second 737-8 max left PTY and should be arriving to SCL.

Boeing ( in sales terms) have been going nowhere with the 737-7 MAX ( especially compared to its older uncle the -700 when that was launched in the 1990s) . It is a bit of a sales disaster really as is its competitor the A319neo.

So Boeing have been looking at a new all cattle class variant of the 737-MAX at the urging of their customers, particularly Southwest, lets call it the 737 MAX 150 as there will also be an 8 variant called the 737 MAX 200 in a few years.

It seems it will NOT be a Max 7 stretch but a Max 8 SHRINK of some sort.

It is also intended as a defensive play for Boeing against the Bombardier CS300 over the medium term. The size of the overall CS order mooted for Delta ( 75 + 50 options) must have made Boeing react to a greater extent than merely dumping 737-700s at firesale prices to retain market share as they did with some carriers early this year.

Anyway the WSJ had the story first and nobody has actually ordered one yet it seems.

http://www.wsj.com/articles/boeing-c...jet-1461259670

I suspect a Max 8 shrink to 150 seats will be too heavy to compete with a CS300 unless the wingbox and wings are substantially shrunk to save weight as well. Not a trivial task compared to sticking in or pulling out a fuselage frame or 2.

I don't think Boeing expects to sell many 737 MAX 7's because the airline that should be buying the most of the MAX 7 model, Southwest Airlines, already has a HUGE fleet of 737-700's (all of them retrofitted with winglets to improve longer-distance fuel burn) and are not in the market to replace them soon.

The article specifically mentions Southwest, together with United as the airlines that Boeing is talking with right now.

And the logic that they won't order the -7 because they have a lot of -700s doesn't make any sense. In 2020 their oldest -700 will be 23 years old, that's about the age that Southwest usually starts to retire their 737s. Some might fly longer, but there will be a clear need for new 737-700 replacements all through the 2020s. Not all of them will be replaced by -7s, they are already taking more and more -800s and have placed a huge -8 order. I still see them ordering the -7 in the hundreds, although not as many as the number of -300s and -700s they currently have in their fleet (about 600).

I do think that Boeing also sees this, proposing this new -7 just to make it even more similar to the 737-8, resulting in not only in a better economics for the airlines but also in lower production costs for Boeing.
