The Max Test Program is proceeding very fast. After all the only changes are APU, Nose Gear, Engines, Wings, and cockpit upgrades. Plus various minor details. So it's simply a refreshed 737NG. They are on track to deliver the first frame this fall.

Boeing felt pressure from Airbus to hurry up the max production .... that is my guess.

Korean Air commences supply of Boeing 737 MAX Winglets

Seoul, Korea (12 May, 2016) – Korean Air commences supplying Advanced Technology Winglets for Boeing 737 MAX, one of the Boeing 737 Next Generation series, advancing the development of the wing core parts for the aircraft.

Korean Air hosted a commemorative event at its Tech Center in Busan on May 11 to celebrate delivering the first B737 MAX winglet. Mr. Ham Myeong-rae, Senior Vice President of Korean Air Aerospace Division, participated in the event, together with representatives from Korean Air and Boeing.

B737 MAX is characterized by its high fuel efficiency and long range of about 6,500 km. The aircraft has already recorded over 3,000 orders from 64 clients around the world.

The winglet, featuring a split tip, will be installed on B737 MAX’s three-meter long wings which can play a role to increase the wing length, reduce resistance, and improve fuel efficiency by 1.5%.

The production of B737 MAX Advanced Technology Winglets requires various cutting-edge technologies, such as fabrication technique for Co-cured Blades, ultraprecision machining system and non-destructive inspection.

Korean Air has set up a task force comprising of specialists to take charge of the project and perform various tests, ensuring the maturity of technologies and identifying solutions to different problems. After years of development, Korean Air finally constructed a mass production system for the winglets.

Following the first B737 MAX winglet delivery, Korean Air will be supplying 2,400 units of B737 MAX winglets for several years.

Korean Air has played a major role in components manufacturing for both Boeing and Airbus, the world’s most famous aircraft manufacturers. The airline has participated in development of B787’s major components, including the composite rear fuselage of the aircraft and the raked wing tips. Furthermore, Korean Air has demonstrated its outstanding manufacturing ability of complex composite aerostructures by producing cargo doors for A350 and Sharklets for A320

Boeing, Vietjet Finalize Vietnam’s Largest Ever Commercial Airplane Purchase

His Excellency Mr. Trần Đại Quang, President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, President Barack Obama witness historic event

Order includes 100 737 MAX 200s

HANOI, May 23, 2016 – VietJet Aviation Joint Stock Company and Boeing [NYSE: BA] have finalized an order for 100 737 MAX 200 airplanes, the largest ever single commercial airplane purchase in Vietnam aviation. His Excellency Mr. Trần Đại Quang, President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, and U.S. President Barack Obama, witnessed the historic agreement, valued at approximately $11.3 billion at current list prices.

The signing ceremony, conducted by Vietjet President and CEO Nguyễn Thị Phương Thảo and Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Ray Conner, took place at the Presidential Palace in Hanoi, at approximately 11:40 a.m. local time.

"Vietjet is efficiently operating a fleet of narrow body airplanes. Our investment in a fleet of B737 Max 200 will accommodate our strategy of growing Vietjet's coming international route network including long haul flights,” said Madam Nguyễn Thị Phương Thảo during the signing. “Through this agreement, Vietjet will contribute increasing bilateral trade turnover between Vietnam and the United States, as well as the integration and development of the aviation industry in Vietnam.‎”

The airplanes will be delivered from 2019 through 2023, supporting Vietjet’s continuous growth of its domestic as well as international network in the region. This agreement also helps Vietjet to increase its fleet to more than 200 airplanes by the end 2023, with the most modern and advanced technology in the world.

“Boeing is proud to again play an integral role in advancing Vietnam’s aviation industry. We’re honored to be joined by President Quang and President Obama for this historic milestone and order of 100 737 MAX 200 airplanes,” said Conner. “Incorporating the latest design and technology features, the highly efficient 737 MAX 200 will provide Vietjet’s growing network with market-leading economics, a superior passenger experience and contribute significantly to their future success.”

The 737 MAX incorporates the latest technology CFM International LEAP-1B engines, Advanced Technology winglets and other improvements to deliver the highest efficiency, reliability and passenger comfort in the single-aisle market. The new single-aisle airplane will deliver 20 percent lower fuel use than the first Next-Generation 737s and the lowest operating costs in its class – 8 percent per seat less than its nearest competitor. To date, the 737 MAX has accumulated 3,098 orders from 65 customers around the world.

About Vietjet

Vietjet is the first airline in Vietnam to operate as a new-age airline with low-cost and diversified services to meet customers’ demands. It provides not only transport services but also uses the latest e-commerce technologies to offer various products and services for consumers. The airline recently won IOSA Certification from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) after just over three years of operations. Vietjet was also declared “Best Asian Low Cost Carrier” at the TTG Travel Awards 2015, which compiles votes from travelers, travel agencies and tour operators in Asia. The airline was also rated as one of the top three fastest growing airline brands on Facebook in the world by Socialbakers and the most favorite airline in Vietnam in 2015. Currently, the airline operates more than 250 flights each day. It has already operated 50 routes in Vietnam and across the region to international destinations such as Thailand, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, China, Myanmar and Malaysia. It has carried approximately 25 million passengers to date. Looking ahead, the airline plans to expand its network across the region. To prepare for this plan, Vietjet has signed agreements with the world’s leading aircraft-manufacturers to purchase more brand-new and modern aircraft. When Boeing and VietJet announced a cooperation last year it was just waved away as playing good weather for political reasons as the airline had already placed a large order the A320neo. Now we know that it was something more then just diplomatics.

This order brings the total 737 MAX 200 orders to 200.

Excuse my ignorance but what exactly is the 200 MAX. The only thing that comes to my mind is high volume seating that can accommodate 200 pax.

"7 new orders for the #737MAX this week. Total MAX orders = 3,213 #Boeing"

https://twitter.com/BoeingAirplanes/...85847846764544

http://www.boeing.com/commercial/#/orders-deliveries

From this 7 for an unidentified customer it seems 4 are conversions from the NG and 3 completely new orders.

This order brings the total 737 MAX 200 orders to 200.
I personally don't believe the Vietjet order is genuine...like nobody believes the Amadeo order for A380s is real. So total Max 200 orders are probably the original 100 for Ryanair in reality.

Boeing are seriously running the risk of going too far with their ExIm lobbying with this stunt.

Is this Boeing's stunt?

VietJet is a state owned company, they might not even need the ExIm bank to finance this order. They can just depend on their state to get the financial backing. Especially since the order was part of this larger deal between Vietnam and the US. At the same summit where this order was signed the US just lifted the last weapon embargo's against Vietnam that dated from the Vietnam War. Obama was there at the signing event.

Boeing could just be on the receiving end of some good old fashioned diplomatic deal.

The backlog is also large enough for Boeing if 1 order 100 planes falls through in the end. Both Boeing and Airbus know very well that not all of the MAX and neo orders will actually be delivered. It's a completely different situation then with the A380, where Airbus booked the Amedeo order just to safe face during the order drought.

ps. It turns out this is actually the 3rd order for the MAX 200, 1 other order for just 6 planes was placed by another undisclosed airline.
