Boeing and Standard Chartered finalise $960m order for ten next-generation 737-800 aircraft

The UK’s Standard Chartered Bank has finalised a $960m order for ten next-generation 737-800 aircraft with Boeing. Valued according to current list prices, the new order will be leased to an undisclosed customer. Standard Chartered Bank aviation finance head Kieran Corr said: “Our current portfolio consists of over 110 aircraft on operating lease to airline clients globally. We are committed to continuing to grow and diversify our client base over the next couple of years.

“We are investing to leverage our global and leasing capabilities to demonstrate our commitment to key clients by providing aircraft on operating lease to meet increasing air traffic demand across some of the world's fastest growing regions. “With deliveries through 2018, these new Boeing next-generation 737-800s will help us meet near-term client demand and expand our client base in our core markets, such as North East Asia."

Standard Chartered's current fleet has an average age of less than five years, and with the new order, the company aims to help the aviation sector grow in Asia, Africa and the Middle East. Through its aviation finance business, Standard Chartered offers various solutions such as sale and leasebacks, aircraft finance leases, Islamic finance leases, capital market solutions and others.

Meanwhile, Boeing had announced its plan to source carbon fibre pre-impregnated (prepreg) composite material for the Boeing 777X from a new joint venture (JV) formed by Mubadala Development Company and Solvay. The newly formed Mubadala-Solvay JV will produce primary structure composite material that will be used to manufacture Boeing 777X empennage and floor beams.

Boeing secures $2.75bn order for 25 737 MAX 8 jets from Malaysia Airlines

Boeing has won a $2.75bn order for 25 737 MAX 8 aircraft from Malaysia Airlines. The order also includes purchase rights for additional 737 MAX 8 and 737 MAX 9 aircraft. Malaysia Airlines chief executive officer Peter Bellew said: "This deal is a game-changer for Malaysia Airlines with much lower costs and greater efficiency, which we will pass on to our loyal customers with lower fares.

"With the 737 MAX's longer range capabilities, we will be able to connect our passengers to more destinations, in greater comfort and with superior economics." Currently operating 56 737-800 aircraft, Malaysia Airlines aims to increase its presence in the Asean region with the new order. Compared with the first next-generation 737 family aircraft, the 737 MAX will offer 20% less fuel consumption. Powered by CFM International LEAP-1B engines, the aircraft provides the lowest operating costs in its class.Meanwhile, Boeing has reported a 1% revenue increase in the second quarter results, reaching to $24.8bn based on strong commercial deliveries and services growth.

For the quarter ending 30 June, the company has reported a loss of $0.37 ashare (GAAP) and core (non-GAAP) loss of $0.44 a share reflect $3.23 a share impact related to previously announced 787 R&D reclassification and 747 and tanker charges. Boeing chairman president and chief executive officer Dennis Muilenburg said: "The underlying operating performance of the company remains solid with our commercial and defence teams again delivering strong revenues and operating cash flow.

“Actions taken during the quarter that impacted our earnings were the right, proactive steps to reduce risk and strengthen our position for the future.

Boeing is seriously looking at a 737-10, a stretch over the 737-9, giving it the same capacity as the A321. There's also the new Middle of the Market (MoM) plane that Boeing is studying right now, but that it's looking more and more like a 767 replacement then a 757 replacements.

And if you look at the actual current 757 replacements happening at the current operators it's very much the A321ceo and 737-900ER which are taking over the roll of the 757. And United does have 100 737-9 on order, just for this replacement. The success of the A321neo has much more to do with a simply to grow the capacity for A320 operators, not so much as good replacement for the 757. It's main advantage over the 737-9 is the larger size and better field performances. If a 737-10 lives up to it's promises it will also be an aircraft that will be very interesting for 737 operators that seek a similar capacity as the A321.
